The Oak Lawn Fire Department and Police Department’s annual ninth hockey game commences at the Oak Lawn Ice Arena this Sunday, raising money for some great causes. The grudge match starts at 5 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults, $2 for students. Since 2004, police and firefighters have been taking to the ice to raise money for a worthy cause in a high-flying, blade-thrashing, feats-of-strength hockey game. This year, OLPD and OLFD are playing for the Wounded Warrior Project and Chicago Hornets Youth Sled Hockey. The Wounded Warrior Project provides unique direct service programs to injured service members. Park Lawn's annual 'Miles of Smiles' tag days will commence March 29-30 and April 12-13. Tag Day volunteers are needed to collect donations and smiles throughout the Southland.
Park Lawn "Tag Day" volunteers will be out and about throughout the Southland collecting donations on street corners, supermarkets and shopping centers this weekend. This is one of Park Lawn's biggest annual fundraisers. On average, Tag Days help raise more than $50,000 that directly benefits the programs and services for individuals with developmental disabilities at Park Lawn. Park Lawn is also recruiting volunteers to help on the weekend April 12-13 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. to spread the word about Park Lawn during the annual Tag Days event. More than 1,700 have signed up to receive free turkey dinners and children's toys for Big Pappa's Gyros annual Christmas charity dinner. The 1,700 requests represent the hungry, homeless, working poor, unemployed and others facing financial difficulties. For the third consecutive year, Park Lawn is the designated beneficiary for Standard Bank’s “Holiday Hope” ornament sale. Donations will help purchase much-needed items for Park Lawn’s Angel Fund. Big Pappa’s Mr. Gyros collected more than $1,000 at the Goal Post Pub on Friday evening. The money will go toward turkeys and trimmings for 800 free dinners that the restaurant plans to distribute to Oak Lawn residents in need on Christmas Day. Starting around noon on Christmas Day, Big Pappa's Mr. Gyros will be handing out delicious turkey dinners with all the trimmings—no questions asked—to take home to the family or eat at the restaurant.
