Chicago Ridge Mall Under 'Flash Mob Alert'

Group reported to have planned mob action at Chicago Ridge Mall fails to show up on Saturday. Area police maintain high, visible presence at mall and are expected to return on Sunday.

An organized “flash mob” rumored to take place at the Chicago Ridge Mall turned out to be a big bust as police kept up a visible, high presence throughout the mall on Saturday. Chicago Ridge Police alerted stores in the mall on Friday stating they had received “credible intelligence” that the same group responsible for organizing last week’s mob action at Ford City was planning to gather at Chicago Ridge Mall the next day. Connect to Patch: Oak Lawn / Beverly-Mt. Greenwood / Evergreen Park A similar alert was also sent to businesses along Michigan Avenue’s “Magnificent Mile,” WGN TV news reported. Business Comings & Goings: Famous Dave’s to Open Monday on 95th Street

Old Navy is planning a Thanksgiving week move in Chicago Ridge. Plus a doll, bear and toy show is coming to the Tinley Park Convention Center this coming Sunday (Nov. 18).

Famous Dave’s barbecue is trying a new concept with it's Evergreen Park location set to open on Monday, Nov. 19, at 2851 W. 95th St. “It will be 3,600 square feet with seating for 104,” said manager Andre Pleasance. The eatery will be the chain’s eighth location in the Chicago area, all of them corporate owned. “That’s about half the size of a traditional Famous Dave’s,” he said. “It will be the first counter service Famous Dave’s in Chicago.” Customers will place their order and get a number for their table and the food will be brought to them. Famous Dave’s other Chicago-area locations are full service. Pleasance said the Minnesota-based chain is testing the smaller concept in Evergreen Park, and, if successful, may use it in other urban…

Business Comings & Goings: Oak Lawn Couple’s Dream for Field Advances

Hostess outlet store remains open for business after a car drives through the front window, remodeling complete at Chicago Ridge Mall AMC Theater 6 and more business news for Oak Lawn, Evergreen Park, Mt. Greenwood and Beverly.

The dream of Oak Lawn residents Michael and Denise Stillman to turn the site of the classic baseball movie “Field of Dreams” into All-Star Ballpark Heaven continues to move ahead. City officials in Dyersville, Iowa, voted last week to rezone the site from agricultural to commercial, which was needed for the Stillmans’ plan to build a 24-field baseball and softball complex on the land. Dyersville officials annexed the land in July. “This was absolutely a step forward,” said Denise Stillman. “We are still on target to close on the land at the end of August or early September,” she said. The Stillmans and the other investors, operating as Go the Distance Baseball LLC, announced last October they had a deal to buy the movie site, including …

Business Comings & Goings: Wolf’s Bakery Carries on Dressel’s Tradition

Oak Lawn Classic Car Show will have hundreds of automobiles on display Sunday in the library parking lot.

When I was a kid, you knew it was going to be a good time when a Dressel’s chocolate fudge whipped cream cake made its way to the table. Apparently, so did everyone else of my generation who grew up on the South Side or in the south suburbs. The cakes were sold at the Dressel’s Bakery in Chicago, and at an outlet store near 90th and Cicero in Oak Lawn, and were readily available frozen in most Chicago-area supermarkets. That is, until the French company that had acquired the bakery closed up shop many, many years ago. A few years ago, while still I was still toiling at the SouthtownStar newspaper, columnist Phil Kadner wrote about the Dressel’s cake that we all so loved. After some taste tests, it was determined that Baumann’s Bakery in …

Business Comings & Goings: New Bookstore Opens At Chicago Ridge Mall

Find out how you can get a free ticket for Saturday's Country Throwdown concert at Toyota Park.

Books-a-Million opened its third Chicago-area bookstore last week inside the former Borders Express store at Chicago Ridge Mall. Store manager Brandon Wolak said the retailer has been successful in the South and decided the recent demise of Borders gave it an opportunity to expand in the North. The retailer opened a store in Southlake Mall in Hobart, Ind., late last year and will open another store in a couple of weeks at Fox Valley Center in Aurora. The company has had a store in downtown Chicago for a while, Wolak said. Wolak brushed aside concerns that bookstores are dying out. He said there is still demand for books. “We have more than enough customers who don’t like to read e-books or books online,” he said. “They like the feel of a …

Moviegoers who see a show at Chicago Ridge Mall can now enjoy a cold one while catching a flick.
