Oak Lawn's Halloween Saved!

Trustees reinstate 8 p.m. curfew for Halloween trick or treating--but with conditions.

Tuesday’s village board meeting lasted all of 29 minutes, much of which was spent discussing Oak Lawn’s curfew for Halloween trick or treating. Last year the curfew for trick or treating in the village was shortened to 7 p.m. after Trustee Alex Olejniczak (Dist. 2) said he received calls from a concerned parent that 8 p.m. was too long of a window for kids to be out running around in the dark. Olejniczak also said that 8 o'clock was a little late for seniors to be opening their doors at night. Some parents complained on Patch that they couldn't get home from work until 6 p.m. Under Olejniczak’s proposal to end trick or treating at 7 p.m., by the time they arrived home and got kids changed into costumes Halloween would be over. Oak Lawn …

If everyone is so concerned about getting home from work and taking their little ones trick or treating, maybe we should follow Evergreen Park's trick or treating rules. This would allow the little ones to enjoy the holiday, accompanied by an adult, without us seniors worrying about opening a door to older trick or treaters. •For children under 18 years of age without a parental guardian, trick-…   more ›

Trautsch: 'We Don't Need Any More Rules'

Oak Lawn Trustee Cindy Trautsch explains why she voted no on the mayor's ordinance to add additional "Robert's Rules" to the village code.

In a turn of events that surprised some regulars in the board chamber last Tuesday, Oak Lawn Trustee Cindy Trautsch (Dist. 1) voted no to an ordinance that would have amended the how village board meetings are conducted. Subscribe to the Oak Lawn Patch newsletter and breaking news alerts. The measure was introduced by Mayor Dave Heilmann over the summer to cut down on the “unnecessary fighting” during village board meetings. Last month, the village board voted 4-3—the mayor flexing his newfound board majority—to approve the "language" in the proposed revisions to Title I, Section 6-5, Rules and Order of the village code. The Oak Lawn Village Board's rules of decorum are based on Robert’s Rules of Order, long considered the gold standard …

The Rundown: Trautsch Wants Announcements Trimmed from Village Board Meeting

Trustee thinks public service announcements distract village board from business.

On a Tuesday evening filled with awards and recognition of community members’ achievements, Trustee Cindy Trautsch (Dist. 1) proposed that  some of the excess public service announcements be trimmed from the regular Oak Lawn Village Board meetings. “I had suggested that we move announcements to the 7 to 7:30 p.m. slot so that, we, as a board, can have our meetings and get out earlier within our time frame,” Trautsch said. Sign up for the O-L Patch newsletter and breaking news alerts. Announcements of carnivals, 5K runs, parish smokers and fundraisers, for example, would be announced before the village board’s regular 7:30 p.m. starting time on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month. “Move these so they don’t take away from the meeting…

Trustee Trautsch Uses 'A' Word

Did someone forget to add a new position of assistant village manager to 2012 budget?

Trustee Cindy Trautsch (Dist. 1) brought up the “A” word during Tuesday’s Oak Lawn Village Board meeting—“assistant village manager”—when she asked for a status update on the possibility of bringing in help for the village manager. The District 1 trustee has complained in the past of Village Manager Larry Deetjen’s “slow response time” to her emails and phone calls. TAKE THE POLL: Should Oak Lawn create a new position of assistant village manager? “Is that something we’re still discussing?” Trautsch asked. Mayor Dave Heilmann said such a matter of creating a position for an assistant village manager that it needed to be put on the board agenda. Trustee Alex Olejniczak (Dist. 2) expressed confusion “because I felt we budgeted for that …
