Big Pappa’s Gyros at 10806 S. Cicero Ave. in Oak Lawn is gearing up for its third annual Christmas dinner giveaway. “Before we opened Big Pappa’s, I used to work at homeless shelters and know what a difference a nice meal at Christmas means to people,” said owner Sandi DiGangi. DiGangi said anyone can sign up at her restaurant for a holiday dinner but she especially wants to hear from senior citizens. “I like to help out seniors because they aren’t going to make themselves a nice dinner,” she said. DiGangi said she will also distribute toys to needy families that sign up to receive one of her turkey dinners complete with mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, rolls, gravy, cranberries, soup, salad and dessert. “We deliver full meals,” she said…

Famous Dave’s in Evergreen Park reopened Tuesday at 2 p.m. after its grand opening on Monday was interrupted by a car crashing through the front window. The barbecue restaurant at 2851 W. 95th St. will be open for business as usual today though the front of the building is sporting a wooden patch to cover the hole. Repairs are expected to be completed by sometime next week. No one was injured in the incident that happened just a few hours after the eatery opened to the public. Famous Dave’s is the third local business to survive a run-in with a car in recent months. Back in August, Bookie’s Paperbacks in Beverly and the Hostess/Wonder Bread outlet store in Burbank both were hit by cars. For information on Famous Dave’s, call 708-423-5546 …

Famous Dave’s barbecue is trying a new concept with it's Evergreen Park location set to open on Monday, Nov. 19, at 2851 W. 95th St. “It will be 3,600 square feet with seating for 104,” said manager Andre Pleasance. The eatery will be the chain’s eighth location in the Chicago area, all of them corporate owned. “That’s about half the size of a traditional Famous Dave’s,” he said. “It will be the first counter service Famous Dave’s in Chicago.” Customers will place their order and get a number for their table and the food will be brought to them. Famous Dave’s other Chicago-area locations are full service. Pleasance said the Minnesota-based chain is testing the smaller concept in Evergreen Park, and, if successful, may use it in other urban…

Legalized video poker arrived in Oak Lawn this week when five of the gambling machines were turned on Monday afternoon at Murphy’s Law Bar & Grill at 9247 S. Cicero Ave. Business has been brisk at the machines, Diane Cech, a bartender at Murphy’s, said Tuesday. “People have been coming in that I have never seen before,” she said. “They have been coming in, having lunch and playing a little poker.” Cech said Murphy’s has five video machines, the most allowed by state law, and each machine offers a variety of games including poker and blackjack. Video gaming became legal in Illinois on Oct. 9, when machines were turned on at dozens of establishments in the state under a law approved in 2009. The Illinois Gaming Board said it initally …

Baseball Hall of Famer Wade Boggs last week became the latest investor in the All-Star Ballpark Heaven project of Oak Lawn couple Michael and Denise Stillman. Boggs told the Sun-Times he joined the Stillmans because their plans for a 24 field baseball complex on the site of the Kevin Costner baseball classic “Field of Dreams” in Dyersville, Iowa, would give kids in the Midwest a place of their own. “The proximity throughout the Midwest and the West gives parents in these tough economic times an opportunity to have a tremendous facility, expand their baseball dreams of going to the next level and possibly going to the Major Leagues,” Boggs told the Sun-Times. No details were disclosed about the amount of Boggs’ investment, but it is the …
