State's Attorney: 'Protect Yourself from Identity Theft'

Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez says identity theft is on the rise, so she's pulled together tips on how to stay on top of identity theft.

Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in America—the Federal Trade Commission estimates that nearly 9 million people become victims of identity thieves every year.   Having your personal identification stolen can cost you financially, tarnish your credit record and take months—if not years—to clear up. There are several ways identity thieves gain access to your personal information: You need to be vigilant about safeguarding your personal information. While you cannot completely prevent someone from stealing your personal information, there are ways to greatly reduce your chances of becoming a victim: You should also monitor your credit reports. SATURDAY, August 25 A 28-year-old Burbank woman was charged with disorderly conduct after her ex-boyfriend said she allegedly came to his house twice in the middle of the night and woke up the entire household, police said. The 31-year-old boyfriend said that the woman, identified as Francesca Lungaro rang the doorbell non-stop, yelling and screaming that he come outside, the report alleged at 2 a.m. August 25. She had also been by an hour before, police said. Police said that Lungaro went to the man’s house on the 5100 block of Oak Center Drive and wanted to talk to him about a rumor concerning a new girlfriend when her text messages were not answered in a timely manner…

Learn How to Protect Yourself from Identity Theft

Standard Bank and Trust is hosting a seminar, teaching residents how to protect themselves from identity theft and fraud schemes, then a community-wide paper shredding event.

With the several schemes out to prey on innocent residents, it is imperative to know what to do to safeguard yourself. Standard Bank and Trust, 2400 W. 95th St. in Evergreen Park is stepping up to help residents protect themselves from these dangers by hosting an identity theft seminar on Tuesday, April 24, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. At the seminar, residents will learn how to identify identity theft, how to protect themselves from it and how to protect themselves from the various fraud schemes.
