Marist Places Fourth at Class 4A Girls Volleyball State Tournament

Redhawks drop Class 4A third-place match to St. Charles East 25-23, 22-25, 25-21 at Redbird Arena in Normal.

Marist lost back-to-back volleyball matches just once during the regular season. The Redhawks tried to avoid doing it in the post-season during Saturday night's Class 4A third-place match against St. Charles East at Illinois State's Redbird Arena in Normal. After dropping the opening game 23-25, the Redhawks rallied for a victory in the second game, 25-22, before dropping a back-and-forth decisive third game 25-21. Marist (30-6) would leave Normal with a fourth-place trophy in its first state appearance. "(St. Charles East) did a great job serving and they were aggressive," Marist coach Natalie Holder said. "It was a true battle, and I think for both teams this is a hard match to play. "You come here with a goal and come up a little short …

Girls State Volleyball: Marist Falls to Cary-Grove in Record-Setting Semifinal Match

Redhawks lose an incredible first game by a 35-33 score and then suffer at 25-19 defeat in the second game to decide the Class 4A match in the program's first state appearance.

When you play volleyball, there's going to be a team that wins and another that loses. It's that simple. When you get to the Class 4A state semifinals, winning takes on a heightened sense of urgency, as a state trophy is on the line. It's pressure, but it's also a fantastic opportunity that teams set as one of their goals. Marist and Cary-Grove met on Friday night in the last of the Class 4A semifinals at Redbird Arena in Normal, with the match concluding a long day of volleyball at the arena that had begun at 9 a.m. And with the way the two teams were going at it in Game 1, it looked like the match might extend until Saturday morning. Cary-Grove (36-4) won the lengthy first game, 35-33, in the highest-scoring IHSA tournament game in state…

Girls Volleyball: Chicago Christian, Marian Catholic and Marist Ready to State Their Cases

Three Southland Patch hopefuls have sights set on doing some heavy (trophy) lifting in IHSA girls state volleyball tournament play at Illinois State's Redbird Arena.

One is a Little Giant who has become a recognizable figure on Illinois high school volleyball’s grandest stage. Two other south suburban entries will be looking to carve their own niches Friday and Saturday at the IHSA state tournament. Chicago Christian is seeking to win its second straight state championship and gunning for its third straight appearance in the Class 2A state title match. Since coach Jim Garcia took over in 2008, the Knights have posted a 111-46 record and have won two state trophies (1st in 2010, 2nd in 2009). Chicago Heights Marian Catholic returns to the big dance for the first time since falling in the Class AA quarterfinals in 2002 and returning home empty-handed. The Spartans are guaranteed of adding a trophy to the…

Marist Wins Girls Volleyball Supersectional, Heads to State Finals Tournament

RedHawks rally in Game 3 to beat Lyons at Hinsdale South and punch their ticket to Redbird Arena in Normal for the first time.

It's been a long time coming for Marist and nine-year coach Natalie Holder. The RedHawks have had their share of success over the years, but they had never earned a trip to the state finals. That changed on Saturday as Marist rallied from a 19-14 deficit in Game 3 and disposed of Lyons 25-22, 21-25, 25-23 to win the Hinsdale South Supersectional and advance to the Class 4A girls volleyball state finals tournament. The RedHawks will face either Stevenson or Cary-Grove in a state semifinal match at approximately 9 p.m. on Friday at Redbird Arena in Normal. "To think we started nine years ago and we had just freshmen against seniors and we were getting our (butts) kicked," Holder said. "(Former Marist standout) Abby Nelson said, with all her …

Girls Volleyball: Marist Edges Sandburg, Wins 2nd Straight Sectional Title

Trailing late in both games, RedHawks rally for 28-26, 26-24 victory to move on to supersectional showdown with Lyons.

All year long, Marist coach Natalie Holder has preached to her team to “relentlessly pursue the ball.” Marist did exactly that on Thursday night against Sandburg. Backed by a strong defense that got countless deflections at the net and made several key digs down the stretch, Marist edged Sandburg 28-26, 26-24 to win the Class 4A Andrew Sectional championship. It marks the second straight season that Marist has won the sectional title. “They’re a great team all around and they did come out strong,” Marist outside hitter Mallory Salis said. “We knew coming in it was going to be a battle … but we did what we had to do.” Marist (33-6) twice lost to Sandburg (32-7) during the regular season, but the RedHawks wouldn’t be denied a third time. The…

Girls Volleyball Sectionals: Marist Rallies Past McAuley for Three-Set Victory

The RedHawks used their defense to win the decisive third game and complete the 23-25, 25-16, 25-17 victory, advancing to meet Sandburg in Thursday night's final.

Few teams in the state can match the offensive weapons that Marist possesses throughout its lineup. But it was the RedHawks’ defense that was the difference-maker Tuesday night. Behind the blocking of senior middle Kirsten Ivkovic, Marist rallied for a 23-25, 25-16, 25-17 victory over Mother McAuley in the Class 4A Andrew Sectional semifinals in Tinley Park. This is the second consecutive season that Marist has bounced Mother McAuley from the playoffs, as the RedHawks defeated the Mighty Macs in last year’s sectional championship game. “We’ve worked on mental and physical resiliency all year,” Marist coach Natalie Holder said. “In order to be successful against those big teams … you literally have to not back down.” Backed by raucous …

Girls Volleyball: Marist Escapes with Three-Set Victory Over Lincoln-Way East in Regional Final

Marist 25-22-25, Lincoln-Way East 17-25-15: After failing to close out the Griffins in two sets, the RedHawks regrouped and got the job done in the Class 4A regional final at Thornton Fractional South.

When it comes to beds, couches or any other household furniture, there’s no such thing as “too comfortable.” But for a volleyball team, it might not be the greatest compliment, especially in the playoffs. After cruising to a victory in Game 1, Marist failed to close out Lincoln-Way East in the second game. But the RedHawks, whom many consider to be a state title contender, settled down and rallied back for a 25-17, 22-25, 25-15 victory to claim the Class 4A Thornton Fractional South Regional title. “I think we get too comfortable with teams,” Marist outside hitter Mallory Salis said. “We win the first game and then we get comfortable and we let them into it and we can’t do that because later on we’re going to play teams who are just going …

Athlete of the Week: Marist's Kelly Marcinek Steps to Fore

Junior outside hitter Kelly Marcinek had seven kills in Marist's huge comeback volleyball victory over Mother McAuley last week.

Kelly Marcinek may be in her first year at Marist, but she's already making a huge impact. After transferring from Marian Catholic, Marcinek is a big reason why Marist is ranked No. 1 in Patch's volleyball rankings. She had seven kills in the RedHawks' improbable 26-24, 25-18 victory over Mother McAuley last Tuesday. Three of those kills came early in Game 2, helping Marist jump out to a 10-6 lead and the Redhawks never looked back. Marcinek is honored today for her performance as the Patch Athlete of the Week for Oak Lawn. "Kelly really stepped up for us and did a great job on the outside,” senior setter Ashely Holder said after Marist's victory. Watch: Check out the video for highlights of Marcinek's play against Mother McAuley.
