Boys Bowling: Oak Lawn Places 5th in IHSA State Tournament

Sophomore Ryan Kirby led the way as the Oak Lawn boys bowling team notched a fifth-place finish in the IHSA state tournament.

One frame, one game at a time. The motto served to keep Oak Lawn's boys bowling team focused on the job at hand right to the end of a storybook season. Sophomore Ryan Kirby led the Spartans to a fifth-place finish in the IHSA state tournament at St. Clair Bowl in O'Fallon. Kirby bowled games of 244 and 226 en route to a six-game series of 2,615. His work helped Oak Lawn finish with a pinfall total of 12,484—or about 400 pins behind state champ Lockport. The Porters took the team title with a pinfall total of 12,846. O'Fallon, bowling on its home turf, placed second with a total of 12,772, followed by Salem 12,538 and Minooka 12,537. Oak Lawn also picked up contributions from Ken VandeWerken (2,578), Ryan Campin (2,514), Kyle Rodda (2,499…

Oak Lawn Bowlers Spare Nothing on Journey to IHSA State Tournament

Oak Lawn boys bowling coach Kevin McKeown challenged his Spartans, and they responded with a first-place performance in sectional competition Saturday. And now they're heading back downstate.

Oak Lawn boys bowling coach Kevin McKeown challenged his Spartans heading into IHSA sectional tournament action. “In the last few weeks of the regular season, we were having trouble picking up spares,” he said. “We actually lost more than 300 pins from not picking up spares at the conference tournament and it really hurt us.” McKeown’s four seniors—Ryan Campin, Kyle Rodda, Ken VandeWerken and Cody Hanson—made sure the Spartans were in no pain following a strong performance Saturday at the Oak Lawn Sectional. The four led the Spartans to the team title and a return trip to the IHSA state tournament with a pinfall total of 6,218. And they picked up help from a couple of underclassmen, too—namely sophomore Ryan Kirby and junior Matt …

Boys Bowling: Richards Places 9th in State Tourney, Completes Sweep of Oak Lawn

David Walker and Andrew Byland led Richards to a ninth-place finish in the IHSA boys bowling state tournament and a sweep of rival Oak Lawn in their season-ending series on the lanes.

For the third week in a row, Richards and Oak Lawn hooked up in a boys bowling dual. No, they didn't walk across the street to carry on their neighborhood rivalry. They happily made the trek downstate to compete in the IHSA state tournament Friday and Saturday at St. Clair Bowl in O'Fallon. Richards completed a conference, sectional and state tournament sweep of Oak Lawn by returning home with a ninth-place finish following two sizzling days of bowling. The Bulldogs, led by juniors David Walker and Andrew Byland, finished with a pinfall total of 12,007 and were 814 pins off the pace of state champion Andrew (12,821). Walker finished with a 12-game pinfall total of 2,574 and placed 19th individually to pace Richards. He posted a 214.5 …
