Marian Catholic softball fans know this about Alex Nickel: She plays with determination and heart. And they roared for her in Patch's weekly MVP voting. Nickel outpolled nine others to become eligible for April Patch Athlete of the Month recognition.

After falling behind 28-0 in a first-round playoff matchup at Brother Rice, the Eagles mustered two scores, but weren't able to finish the comeback, losing 35-14 in the first round of the 8A playoffs.
Martez and Andrew Walker were just too much for the Sandburg defense to handle in the first round of the Class 8A football playoffs on Friday. The two Brother Rice running backs combined for 315 yards on the ground and four rushing touchdowns on the way to a 35-14 Crusader victory. Sandburg posed the first scoring threat early in the game, but the Eagles couldn't punch it in as Mike Rago came up short on fouth-and-goal. Brother Rice then went on to rattle off 28 straight points behind two Martez Walker TD runs (28 yards and 13 yards), an offensive fumble recovery for a touchdown by Dan Lyons and a third touchdown by Walker. Brother Rice 35, Sandburg 14: Martez Walker and Andrew Walker combined for all but 11 yards of the Crusaders' entire offensive output in a first-round Class 8A playoff victory over the Eagles.
Breaking It Down: Brother Rice jumped out to a 28-0 lead over Sandburg Friday night on the backs of Andrew Walker and Martez Walker. The two rushed for a combined 330 yards and scored four touchdowns in the Crusaders' 35-14 victory over the Eagles in the first round of the Class 8A football playoffs. At the outset, Sandburg seemed to get the momentem by shutting down the Crusaders offense, forcing a three-and-out. The Eagles marched down the field, but were stuffed after attempting to punch the ball in on a fourth-and-goal play in the first quarter. After that moment, it was all Crusaders and Martez Walker.
