Brother Rice Uses OT Win as Springboard to Entry in Weekly Patch Football Poll

Crusaders climb to No. 3 in Patch Power Rankings after scoring a thrilling 34-31 overtime victory over Marist. Homewood-Flossmoor looks to take care of business on the road, set up a Sept. 16 Southwest Suburban Blue showdown.

1. Lincoln-Way East (2-0): Griffins open play in Southwest Suburban Blue looking to pass first true test. Last week: No. 1. Tonight: vs. Lockport, 7:30 p.m. 2. Homewood-Flossmoor (2-0): Vikings have outscored their first two opponents 123-6. Will it get tougher in Week 3? Last week: No. 2. Tonight: at Lincoln-Way Central, 7:30 p.m. 3. Entrenched? L-W East Holds No. 1 Slot in Weekly Patch Football Poll

Blake Winkler's fast start helps Griffins roar out of the gate. H-F and Sandburg still have some questions to answer heading into play in Week 2 of the high school football season.

1. Lincoln-Way East: Blake Winkler earned Frankfort/Mokena Athlete of the Week honors after completing 12-of-23 for 214 yards and three touchdowns in Lincoln-Way East's 45-14 victory over Edwardsville. And he only played half the game. Last week: No. 1. Tonight: vs. Dunbar, 7:30 p.m. 2. Homewood-Flossmoor: Two plays, two touchdowns, too easy? Homewood-Flossmoor rolled to a 76-6 victory over Chicago Senn. But what did the Vikings find out about themselves? Well, maybe they have another good back in the making. Taje Smith rushed for 79 yards on six carries. He scored four touchdowns. Last week: No. 2. Tonight: vs. Deerfield, 7 p.m. 3. No. 1: Powerful Offense Puts Lincoln-Way East Football on a Pedestal

Griffins return experienced skill players and stand atop the Patch Power Rankings as the high school football season kicks off. But, as they say, it's not where you start that counts. It's where you finish.

1. Lincoln-Way East: The Griffins return QB Blake Winkler, RB Tyler Starke and WR J.J. Robertson after posting a 9-2 record and reaching the second round of the Class 7A football playoffs. Robertson is an Illini recruit. Ivy League schools are courting Winkler. And you know coach Rob Zvonar will find some guys to play defense, don’t you? Tonight: vs. Edwardsville, 6 p.m. at Illinois State University. 2. Homewood-Flossmoor: So, what does coach Craig Buzea do for an encore after leading the Vikings to the Class 8A semifinals in his first season? Simple.
