Top-ranked Marist had no trouble in the opening round of postseason play. Lincoln-Way East, Homewood-Flossmoor, Marian Catholic and Lincoln-Way North also advanced to regional finals.
1. Marist (29-1): Nothing to it. Marist opened postseason play with a name-that-score kind of victory, rolling past Thornton 80-27. Next up: The RedHawks will face Thornton Fractional North at 7:30 p.m. tonight in the Class 4A Marist Regional final. 2. Lincoln-Way East (24-4): Caitlin McMahon (21 points, 7 rebounds) and Taylor Johnson (16 points, 7 steals) powered the Griffins to a 70-24 regional semifinal victory over Crete-Monee. Andrew boys bowling standout Josh Powell outpolled six others in voting for Patch Athlete of the Week, Jan. 22-28. He is now eligible for January Patch Athlete of the Month recognition. Taylor Boardman, senior, forward, girls basketball, Lincoln-Way North. Boardman scored 25 points and led the Phoenix to a 54-39 victory over Thornwood in Southwest Suburban Red Conference action. Johnny Finnin, senior, guard, boys basketball, Lincoln-Way Central. Finnin scored 22 points in the Knights’ 51-34 victory over Shepard. Providence Catholic wrestling standout Eddie Klimara won his fourth straight championship at the Dvorak Memorial tournament. And then he outpolled five others to take Patch Athlete of the Week honors.
Providence Catholic's Eddie Klimara outpolled five others in voting for Patch Athlete of the Week, Dec. 18-24. He is now eligible for December Patch Athlete of the Month recognition. The candidates: LaTondra Brooks, sophomore, guard, girls basketball, Oak Lawn. Brooks scored 41 points in Spartan victories over Rich East (65-60) and Romeoville (63-56). Eddie Klimara, senior, wrestling, Providence Catholic. Klimara won the 126-pound championship at the Dvorak Memorial tournament. L-W North 51, Richards 16: Ashley Weringa scored 14 points and the Phoenix dominated in all phases to cruise in play at Oak Lawn's Holiday Tournament.
The Skinny: It took more than four and a half minutes for Lincoln-Way North to make its first basket in a 51-16 victory over Richards Tuesday in play at the Oak Lawn Holiday Tournament. Then, Taylor Boardman drained a 3-pointer and the Phoenix never looked back as their defense bottled up Richards. The Bulldogs remained without a basket until the final two minutes of the first quarter. Lincoln-Way North put together a 22-2 scoring run before the Richards went on a 6-0 spurt to close out the first half. Lincoln-Way North sealed the deal with a 22-3 flurry to close the second half.
