Lara Groll will never forget the image of her blue-eyed son catheterized and hooked up to an IV, tearing around the playroom in Loyola University Medical Center's pediatric ward, playing with toys and acting like a 2-year-old. Diagnosed at six months old with hydrocephalus — water on the brain — Joshua already has undergone seven surgeries in his two short years at the Maywood hospital to replace two shunts that help drain the excessive fluid collecting between his brain and skull. "It's devastating to watch him go through it, but his attitude is great in the hospital," Lara said. "He's charming the nurses. They gave him his own name tag that says "No. 1 Patient.'
