VIDEO: Bob Mariano Comes To Town

Ground broken for new Mariano's Fresh Market at 111th Street and Cicero Avenue. Watch the video of famed grocery store CEO's message to Oak Lawn residents.

Although the skies were gray, Oak Lawn’s future couldn’t have shone brighter as village officials and Bob Mariano pitched shovels into a ceremonial pile of dirt last Friday. Mr. Mariano, chairman and CEO of Roundy’s Supermarkets, Inc., came to town for the groundbreaking of his self-named Mariano’s Fresh Market of 111th Street and Cicero Avenue. After eight long years of TIF battles and drawn-out litigation, village officials are hoping that Mariano will bring his Midas touch to the blighted corner and that other upscale retailers will follow Before the current and newly elected village board members, including the mayor-elect, Trustee Carol Quinlan (Dist. 5) invoked the …

Business Comings & Goings: Calabria Imports Closes Evergreen Park Location

FrancoNello's opening this month in Beverly? Andy's Frozen Custard eyes Burbank. Mariano's looks to Evergreen Park. Gotcha Haircut opens in Oak Lawn.

Calabria Imports owner Pat Roberto said this week’s closing of the Evergreen Park location at 3512 W. 95th St. was not an easy decision but one that had to be made. “It was starting to hurt the Beverly location,” he said. “I’m sorry it didn’t work out. I appreciate everything that was done for us by the mayor and customers.” Roberto said the Evergreen store had a good customer base but it just wasn’t enough to justify keeping the location open any longer. “We’ll offer delivery to Evergreen Park to try to keep those customers,” he said. “Also, any gift certificates purchased at the Evergreen Park location are good at the Beverly location.” He said the cook from Evergreen was brought over to the Beverly location as well as a couple of other …

Evergreen Park can't even keep a Starbucks open. Folks need to open their wallets or expect little if no retail improvements in their towns. I doubt a Mariano's will stay open there from what I have seen of the Frankfort store and their prices (not too high but not like a Pete's). Sadly, it is too upscale for EP given their past, recent history.   more ›

Oak Lawn Lands Mariano's Fresh Market at 111th Street

Mariano's expected to jobs, tax revenue and more upscale stores to redevelopment project that was "long in coming" to Oak Lawn, mayor says.

Build it and they will come. That’s what the Village of Oak Lawn is banking on with the signing of Mariano’s Fresh Market at 111th Street and Cicero Avenue. Mayor Dave Heilmann officially confirmed the lease agreement with the upscale grocer at Tuesday’s village board meeting after news of the deal was leaked earlier in the day by Patch. “One of the most important parts of getting someone like Mariano’s who has sales that are that strong is that it draws other people to the site,” Heilmann said. “If you’re getting a Mariano’s you’re doing very well.” Mariano's Fresh Market is owned by Milwaukee-based Roundy's Supermarkets and has several locations in the Chicago-area helmed by former Dominck’s CEO Bob Mariano. A Marino’s Fresh Market is …

Comments don't prove me wrong. It's results. The store hasn't opened yet and I AM disappointed it wasn't a Whole Foods. I have a friend who lives near a Mariano's, in the city and she isn't impressed with it. It's a matter of taste. As a person with several degrees including on in Hotel/Restaurant management I will reserve judgement but I am not optimistic. But don't call me wrong! At least Xfit …   more ›
