Business Comings & Goings: Beverly Bank Closes Deal on Village Property in Oak Lawn

The return of Wonder Bread, Career Education Corp. to close Tinley Park campus, Marquette Bank helps families at Christmas.

  Beverly Bank & Trust closed a deal on Jan. 7 to buy a parcel of land owned by Oak Lawn on 95th Street between Raymond Avenue and 53rd Avenue for $1.8 million. Beverly Bank, which is part of the Wintrust financial group, will build a new bank at the site that will include space for a senior community center. “We are planning a spring groundbreaking and anticipate opening in the fourth quarter,” said Mike Johnstone, CEO of Beverly Bank & Trust. Johnstone said a temporary facility will be erected on the site prior to the permanent structure being completed. “We still have to go through the planning process with the village,” Johnstone said. “There are lots of moving pieces with a bank.” Johnstone said the new building would be from 20,000 …

Southtown Paint and Wallpaper, which has been in the painting business for more than 70 years, will be closing its Evergreen Park store at the end of December. Greenwood Store manager Mark Keele said the Evergreen location at 3401 W. 95th St. will be consolidating with the company’s store at 11951 W. 143rd St. in Orland Park as of Jan. 1. Lou Malnati’s pizza chain is hoping to open its latest location at 5261 W. 95th St. in Oak Lawn by the first week of November. The Oak Lawn location would be No. 35 for the chain, which is famous for its deep dish pizza. “Most of our locations are in Chicago and the northern suburbs,” said Director of Marketing Mindy Kaplan. “We just opened a store in Joliet and are looking more into expanding in the south suburbs. “We’re really excited about opening a location in Oak Lawn,” Kaplan said. Lou Malnati’s is renovating a vacant building next door to the new Eva’s Bridal shop and across the street from the library in downtown Oak Lawn. Moviegoers who see a show at Chicago Ridge Mall can now enjoy a cold one while catching a flick. AMC Theatres, which has finished updating the seats and screens at two of the six theaters it operates inside the mall, opened MacGuffin’s Bar and a new concession stand on June 1. The bar offers beer, wine and cocktails to patrons who can meet before a show, recap a movie they have just seen or take their drink of choice into the theater to enjoy while watching a film. Opening MacGuffin’s is part of AMC’s plan to expand food and drink options at locations nationwide. Business Comings & Goings: Bookworm Café Nears First Anniversary at Library

A look at new businesses coming into town and a fond farewell to those that have, for whatever reason, called it quits.

Chef Andy Vaitkus said the hardest part of opening the Bookworm Café in the Oak Lawn Public Library was having to work in such a small space. “It’s only 550 square feet,” he said. “So, we do a lot of cooking with countertop ovens and convection ovens.” That restraint hasn’t kept Vaitkus and his partners from making a go of the café, which will celebrate its first anniversary next month. Vaitkus, who has 12 years of restaurant experience, said business has been great in their first year. “We’re doing a lot of business,” he said. “But we still get a lot of new customers.” Book Worm Café has a pretty extensive menu for such a small space. “Everything we make is from scratch,” he said.
