Brother Rice's New Football Coach is a Familiar Name

Brian Badke will be carrying on a family legacy of coaches when he takes the reins of the football program at Brother Rice next fall. His father and grandfather also coached in the Catholic League.

Badke. That's B-A-D-K-E. The name is a familiar one in Catholic League coaching circles. Brian Badke, named as Brother Rice’s new football coach in May, is following in the footsteps of his father and his grandfather. George Badke once was the head football coach at Fenwick and served as the offensive coordinator at St. Laurence when the Vikings won three Prep Bowls in the 1970s. The late-Bernard Badke was a head basketball coach at St. Rita in the 1950s. “I’m a third-generation coach,” Brian Badke said. “My hope is that I’ll be half the coach that my father and grandfather were. Both were pretty successful.” Badke joins the Brother Rice staff in a full-time capacity on July 1 as the Crusaders’ major gift officer and head football coach. …

Oak Forest's Tevin Coleman, Andrew's Mike Love, Brother Rice's Martez Walker, Providence Catholic's Ryan Ward, Tinley Park's Zack Webster and Lincoln-Way East's Blake Winkler are honored by the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association.

On the final weekend of the high school football season, six Southland Patch players will be recognized during introductions of the IHSFCA All-State teams in Champaign. The introductions will coincide with the playing of state championship games Friday and Saturday at the University of Illinois’ Memorial Stadium. Brother Rice running back Martez Walker was named to the Class 8A all-state team by the IHSFCA. He led the Crusaders to an 8-5 record, setting single-season and career scoring records. Brother Rice dropped a 39-6 decision to Mount Carmel in the Catholic League Blue title game. High School Football's Finest: Winkler, Malec Recognized as Patch Player, Coach of the Year

Lincoln-Way East quarterback Blake Winkler and Andrew coach Jim Malec enjoyed remarkable high school football seasons. The two are my Patch picks for Player and Coach of the Year honors.

An old friend of mine, Edgy Tim O’Halloran, noted recently in his column for the Chicago Tribune how impossible it is to select a high school football Player of the Year and a Coach of the Year. To be sure, this is a task that falls under the category of inexact science. Do you side with the best player? Or the best player on the most successful team? And do you automatically pick the winningest coach? Or do you like the coach who turned a sleeping giant into a winner? Tough questions. No right or wrong answers, either. After boiling my list of candidates down to five, I picked Lincoln-Way East quarterback Blake Winkler as the winner of my Southland Patch Player of the Year sweepstakes. He earned the nod over Oak Forest running back Tevin …

Brother Rice's Martez Walker Cements His Place in Crusader Football History

Martez Walker rushed for 183 yards and three touchdowns in a 35-14 victory over Sandburg in the opening round of the Class 8A football playoffs on Friday night. He also sealed his place in Brother Rice football history.

Brother Rice has a long and storied football tradition that includes at least two NFL players. The school also has sent a long list of Crusaders into the NCAA Division I ranks over the years. The list all-timers now includes the name of Martez Walker. Walker has cemented his place in the Crusaders history books with three touchdowns in Brother Rice's 35-14 victory over Sandburg in the first round of the Class 8A playoffs on Friday night. He boosted his season TD total to 19 and his point total to 118. Both are single-season school records. In four years of varsity football, Walker has scored 42 touchdowns and more than 200 points. On Friday night, he proved just how explosive he could be. He had 16 carries for 183 yards, an average just …

Watch: Brother Rice Walks All Over Sandburg

After falling behind 28-0 in a first-round playoff matchup at Brother Rice, the Eagles mustered two scores, but weren't able to finish the comeback, losing 35-14 in the first round of the 8A playoffs.

Martez and Andrew Walker were just too much for the Sandburg defense to handle in the first round of the Class 8A football playoffs on Friday. The two Brother Rice running backs combined for 315 yards on the ground and four rushing touchdowns on the way to a 35-14 Crusader victory. Sandburg posed the first scoring threat early in the game, but the Eagles couldn't punch it in as Mike Rago came up short on fouth-and-goal. Brother Rice then went on to rattle off 28 straight points behind two Martez Walker TD runs (28 yards and 13 yards), an offensive fumble recovery for a touchdown by Dan Lyons and a third touchdown by Walker. The Eagles rallied in the fourth quarter with rushing touchdowns from Lemonte Booker and Anthony Adams, coupled with …

Class 8A Football: Brother Rice Win Over Sandburg is a Walk(er) in the Park

Brother Rice 35, Sandburg 14: Martez Walker and Andrew Walker combined for all but 11 yards of the Crusaders' entire offensive output in a first-round Class 8A playoff victory over the Eagles.

Breaking It Down: Brother Rice jumped out to a 28-0 lead over Sandburg Friday night on the backs of Andrew Walker and Martez Walker. The two rushed for a combined 330 yards and scored four touchdowns in the Crusaders' 35-14 victory over the Eagles in the first round of the Class 8A football playoffs. At the outset, Sandburg seemed to get the momentem by shutting down the Crusaders offense, forcing a three-and-out. The Eagles marched down the field, but were stuffed after attempting to punch the ball in on a fourth-and-goal play in the first quarter. After that moment, it was all Crusaders and Martez Walker. He scored from 28 yards out in the second quarter to cap a 99-yard Crusader drive. Martez Walker found paydirt again from 14 yards out…

Playoff Primer: Kremer's High School Football Hot Picks

Sports Editor Ron Kremer takes a stab at predicting the winners in all 11 high school football playoff games involving Southland Patch teams. Check out the power of his crystal ball.

Homewood-Flossmoor (6-3) at Marist (7-2), 7 p.m. Friday. Quick take: Terrific first-round matchup, one that pits two quarterbacks (H-F’s Tim Williams and Marist’s Ian Woodworth) and two explosive offensives. First team to 50 wins? Pick: Marist. Sandburg (6-3) at Brother Rice (6-3), 7 p.m. Friday. Quick take: Sandburg has the defensive front to make life tough on Brother Rice running backs Andrew Walker and Martez Walker. Stop them? That’s another story. Pick: Brother Rice. Plainfield South (5-4) at Lincoln-Way East (9-0), 7 p.m. Friday. Quick take: Look for Lincoln-Way East to put the pedal to the metal here in a bid to get its starters out early. Griffins will face Providence or Wheaton Warrenville South in Round 2. Pick: Lincoln-Way East…

Brother Rice Football Misses Golden Opportunity to Join Heavyweight Ranks

Brother Rice will be looking ahead toward the IHSA state football playoffs, but it may be kicking itself in the rear end for not winning against Loyola.

Brother Rice coach Steve Nye said all the right things after his team’s 20-13 loss to Loyola Academy on Friday night. With one game left in the regular season and only two weeks before the playoffs start, Nye wasn’t going to talk about the “ifs”, “ands” or “buts.” He wanted to focus on what's ahead for the Crusaders. “It’s really what we do going forward,” Nye said. “Our season is going to be defined by what we do in the playoffs.” That may be true, but Nye and Brother Rice have to be shaking their heads after missing a golden opportunity to take down one of the state’s premier programs. Loyola dominated the first half without playing its best. Rambler quarterback Malcolm Weaver had an inconsistent night throwing the ball, and Brother Rice…

Football: Loyola Defense Stands Tall in Win over Brother Rice

The Ramblers bottled up the Crusader running attack and only allowed six points on defense in a 20-13 win at Brother Rice.

Breaking It Down: Loyola’s defense was stifling in the first half of a 20-13 victory over Brother Rice on Friday night, holding the Crusaders to only a handful of first downs. The Ramblers bottled up the Brother Rice running attack of Andrew and Martez Walker, and quarterback Pat Parrilli was unable to complete many passes because of a dominating Rambler pass rush. Parrilli wasn’t helped by a couple drops from Brother Rice receivers, either. Brother Rice’s only touchdown came on a 90-yard kickoff return from Martez Walker. Brother Rice’s defense did a nice job of containing Loyola’s dual-threat quarterback, Malcolm Weaver, forcing him to throw in the windy conditions. Weaver was inconsistent early on, missing a couple of deep balls, but …
