NAMES IN THE NEWS: LCpl Joseph Harr Comes Home, Frankie 'the Bambino' Alvarado

One is a U.S. Marine who just finished serving a tour in Afghanistan; the other is a slugger in youth baseball. They're both people to watch in Oak Lawn.

More than 250 neighbors gathered on Sproat Avenue awaiting the homecoming of a favorite son last Sunday. Looking dashing in his Marine uniform, LCpl. Joseph Harr, a 2010 graduate of Oak Lawn Community High School arrived in style riding in an open top red Corvette. For his excited dad, William, it was the best Father's Day he ever had. NAMES IN THE NEWS: Luis and Diana--A Love Story

Army Staff Sgt. Luis Aponte Fontanez served two tours of duty in the Middle East. His wife, Diana Cornejo, kept the home fires burning watching over their blended family in Hometown.

Army Staff Sgt. Luis Aponte Fontanez married Diana Cornejo four years ago. Between them they have seven children. Luis had already served one tour of duty in Iraq. Last fall he received his second call up, this time to Afghanistan. Luis left with the Army National Guard in January. When he learned that his orders were being cut short and he was coming home a month early, Luis emailed friend Jacqueline Canty at the Oak Lawn Park District for her help in surprising his wife. Michael Blaha runs half-marathons to raise awareness of neurofibromatosis in honor of a former student. Det. Brian Duffy catches bad guys. And Lt. Vincent Griffin saves the lives of cardiac patients.

Michael Blaha, part-time religion teacher at St. Gerald’s Catholic Church, woke up one morning 20 years and decided to start running. He soon discovered that he had a knack for it and last year competed in his first Chicago Marathon. Inspired by a former student, John Peltzer, who was born with neurofibromatosis, Blaha has dedicated a year of half-marathons in John’s honor. “What was stunning to me is that NF is a more common hereditary disease than multiple sclerosis, Tay-Sachs, and Huntington’s,” Blaha told Patch.  Today (May 6), Blaha is running on behalf of Midwest NF in the First Midwest Bank Southwest Half-Marathon in Palos Heights.
