'There's A Kind of Hush All Over Oak Lawn'

Less than half of the Oak Lawn Village Board candidates responded to an invitation for a forum in which to answer residents' questions about their stands on village issues.

Sign up for the Oak Lawn Patch newsletter and follow us on Facebook. With the local election a month away, there’s a kind of hush all over Oak Lawn. The likelihood of a forum taking place before the April 9 election—where voters can ask candidates’ if they support Advocate Christ Medical Center paying an impact fee to the village, or questions …

Business Comings & Goings: Famous Dave’s Reopens After Smashing Debut

Hostess outlet stores fall victim to company's pending liquidation, Oak Lawn local businesses hold first-ever 'Small Business Saturday' local shopping event and Black Friday hours for area shopping malls.

Famous Dave’s in Evergreen Park reopened Tuesday at 2 p.m. after its grand opening on Monday was interrupted by a car crashing through the front window. The barbecue restaurant at 2851 W. 95th St. will be open for business as usual today though the front of the building is sporting a wooden patch to cover the hole. Repairs are expected to be completed by sometime next week. No one was injured in the incident that happened just a few hours after the eatery opened to the public. Famous Dave’s is the third local business to survive a run-in with a car in recent months. Back in August, Bookie’s Paperbacks in Beverly and the Hostess/Wonder Bread outlet store in Burbank both were hit by cars. For information on Famous Dave’s, call 708-423-5546 …

I live in Oak Lawn and feel the closing of both Sara Lee and Hostess is especially a blow to the seniors who shopped at these stores. I will miss the stores and wish the workers well; they were always so nice at the Sara Lee store in OL.   more ›

Business Comings & Goings: Al's Beef/Nancy's Pizza Closes

Oak Lawn Chamber moves into new digs, Wilsons Leather opens at Chicago Ridge Mall.

The combined Al's Beef and Nancy's Pizza at 5128 W. 95th St. in Oak Lawn closed at the end of business on Sept. 18. A receptionist at the corporate office in Orland Park confirmed the closing but had no details and requests for more information were not returned. The Oak Lawn Chamber of Commerce is in the midst of moving from its longtime location at 5314 W. 95th St. into new digs at the Metra Station at 95th Street and Tulley Avenue. “We will open in our new location at 9 a.m. on Oct. 1,” said chamber director Julie Miller. Miller said the move was necessitated by the pending sale of the 5314 W. 95th St. building by the village. “Our membership does feel that the new location will give village businesses more exposure to the commuters who…

Business Comings & Goings: Oak Lawn Couple’s Dream for Field Advances

Hostess outlet store remains open for business after a car drives through the front window, remodeling complete at Chicago Ridge Mall AMC Theater 6 and more business news for Oak Lawn, Evergreen Park, Mt. Greenwood and Beverly.

The dream of Oak Lawn residents Michael and Denise Stillman to turn the site of the classic baseball movie “Field of Dreams” into All-Star Ballpark Heaven continues to move ahead. City officials in Dyersville, Iowa, voted last week to rezone the site from agricultural to commercial, which was needed for the Stillmans’ plan to build a 24-field baseball and softball complex on the land. Dyersville officials annexed the land in July. “This was absolutely a step forward,” said Denise Stillman. “We are still on target to close on the land at the end of August or early September,” she said. The Stillmans and the other investors, operating as Go the Distance Baseball LLC, announced last October they had a deal to buy the movie site, including …
