RED CARPET: Oak Lawn Community High School 2013 Prom

Highlights of the Spartan 2013 prom.

Oak Lawn Community High School's seniors sure didn't look like kids all dressed up for prom on May 3. Just when students thought it was safe to step out of the Humvee limo at the Ashton House in Willowbrook after numerous earlier photo ops by their proud parents, Patch was on hand to catch the red carpet promenade. Relive the memories of the 2012 OLCHS prom. Fashion tastes ran toward the conservative, with many girls opting for traditional ball gowns, perfectly color-coordinated with their dates' tuxes. In case parents are wondering, your children were beautifully behaved. After dinner and dancing, some OLCHS seniors opted for a school-sponosred, post-prom cruise.

Spartan Anglers Named 'Fishing Team of the Year'

A surprise ceremony was held at Oak Lawn Community High School recognizing the student anglers for promoting the sport in school and in the community.

The Oak Lawn Community High School fishing team looked a little shocked when walking into the Little Theater last Friday to the cheers of fellow students and a table loaded with fishing gear from a sporting goods company. Watch the video of the surprise award ceremony. The surprise ceremony honored OLCHS as the Fish and Outdoor Radio Show/Plano and Frabill’s “Illinois High Schools Fish Here” fishing team of the year. The Illinois High School Association established bass fishing as a high school sport at the beginning of the 2008-09 school year with 199 teams. The sport has since grown to include 237 high school fishing teams in Illinois. “Fishing and Outdoor Radio Show” hosts Jim DaRosa and Don Dziedzina came up with the idea to recognize …

Remembering Tim: Dad Honors Son's Memory with OLCHS Scholarship

Family and friends are hosting a candlelight bowling fundraiser this Saturday (March 23) at Fox Bowl in Wheaton. Proceeds will go toward the Tim Nickos Memorial Scholarship.

Tim Nickos was in the peak of health when he passed away in his sleep between his junior and senior year at Oak Lawn Community High School in June 2011. Sign up for the Oak Lawn Patch newsletter and follow us on Facebook. The 17-year-old swam the 500-meter race and was distance swimmer for the varsity swim team. He played trumpet in the Spartan Band. He taught young children how to swim and built racing engines in his grandpa’s shop. And Tim was a devoted boyfriend to Liz Nedji. “We found out after the fact that Tim had an enlarged heart,” Tim’s dad, Dale Nickos, said. “He was in perfect shape but it didn’t matter. It was probably worse for him.” Since his son’s sudden passing, Dale has worked to keep Tim’s memory alive  by creating a …
