Oak Lawn boys bowling team stands tall at Spartans winter sports awards bash. Kevin McKeown named South Suburban Red Conference Coach of the Year for the second time in a row.
For the eighth time in the last 10 years, the Oak Lawn Community High School boys bowling team rolled to the top of the heap by earning a trip to the IHSA state tournament. The Spartans placed second in the Hinsdale South Sectional and 22nd in state tourney play at St. Clair Bowl in O’Fallon. Coach Kevin McKeown was named the South Suburban Red Conference Coach of the Year for the second time in a row. Cody Marek and Ryan Campin were named the team’s co-MVPs during Oak Lawn’s recent winter sports bash. Mike Pontrelli was awarded the Spartan boys bowling Sportsmanship Award. Marek, Campin and Dan Pfister were cited as all-conference picks. And the future looks bright for the Spartans, too. Oak Lawn also won the boys bowling sophomore …

Oak Lawn boys bowling coach Kevin McKeown worked with his team to stage a community service event that ended with the Spartans treating Ronald McDonald House families to a day of fun on the lanes.
On “Funday Sunday,” members of the Oak Lawn Community High School bowling team delivered goodies to families in need and learned a valuable life lesson. “It was an opportunity for our kids to see how fortunate they are and how hard life can be sometimes and how a simple act of kindness can bring so much happiness to a family that doesn’t have much to smile about,” Oak Lawn boys bowling coach Kevin McKeown said. “It was great to see how their efforts brought so much joy into these families’ lives.” That joy was born out of a community service event dreamed up by McKeown and his team. David Walker and Andrew Byland led Richards to a ninth-place finish in the IHSA boys bowling state tournament and a sweep of rival Oak Lawn in their season-ending series on the lanes.
For the third week in a row, Richards and Oak Lawn hooked up in a boys bowling dual. No, they didn't walk across the street to carry on their neighborhood rivalry. They happily made the trek downstate to compete in the IHSA state tournament Friday and Saturday at St. Clair Bowl in O'Fallon. Richards completed a conference, sectional and state tournament sweep of Oak Lawn by returning home with a ninth-place finish following two sizzling days of bowling. The Bulldogs, led by juniors David Walker and Andrew Byland, finished with a pinfall total of 12,007 and were 814 pins off the pace of state champion Andrew (12,821). Oak Lawn's varsity boys bowling team is headed to the IHSA state tournament. The JV team capped its season by winning the conference title. So, the Spartans are developing a next-generation pipeline for success.
At Oak Lawn Community High School, the boys bowling cupboard is well-stocked. The Oak Lawn varsity team will be competing in the IHSA state tournament Friday and Saturday at St. Clair Bowl in downstate O’Fallon. The junior varsity team wrapped up its season by winning the South Suburban Red conference tournament at Elmar Bowl in Burbank. The next-generation Spartans finished with a pinfall total of 5,541 for six games. Freshman Cody Bulow was the individual medalist in the JV conference tournament. Freshman Ryan Kirby followed hot on his heels in second place. Richards and Oak Lawn blasted to a 1-2 finish in the Hinsdale South Sectional on Saturday at Willowbrook Lanes. Next, the two neighborhood rivals will be bowling on the IHSA's biggest stage in the state tournament.
They’re taking their neighborhood rivalry on the road and next will be competing on the biggest stage in IHSA boys bowling. Richards and Oak Lawn powered to a 1-2 finish in the Hinsdale South Sectional on Saturday at Willowbrook Lanes. Both will bowl next in the IHSA state tournament Friday and Saturday (Jan. 27-28) at St. Clair Bowl in downstate O’Fallon. Richards, led by senior Zak Engstrom, finished with a pinfall total of 6,322 in Saturday’s sectional. The Bulldogs topped Oak Lawn (6,134) by almost 200 pins.
