We called on our Facebook fans from across the south suburbs to share their experiences dealing with the expenses of a modern-day prom.
For some, prom is the apex of the high school experience—a magical night to be looked back on with nostalgia for years to come. Others will recount it as a well-dressed ten-ton credit-munching beast with an insatiable appetite. Like Matt L., our Tinley Park Patch Facebook friend who needed several years to pay his parents off his parents for a prom loan. Or Angie S. from Oak Lawn, who budgeted $1,000 for her daughters’ proms (and she’s not the exception). Now that we’re in the heart of prom season, we were curious to hear about the financial impact prom has on the typical south suburban family. How much does the average local family spend on a prom, and who foots the bill? Mom and dad, or the teens? We asked our Facebook fans across the …

As a New Jersey principal takes flak from parents for banning strapless dresses from a school dance, we ask our Facebook friends how they feel about the attire issue.
Do you think the constitution protects your daughter’s right to expose her bare shoulders at a school dance? Some New Jersey parents are arguing it does in response to a principal’s unpopular decision to ban strapless dresses from a junior high school dance, reports the Chicago Tribune. The principal called strapless dresses "distracting" to boys. One New Jersey teenager fought the ban, stating in a letter, "Basically by saying 'it distracts the boys' you're also saying that it is our fault on how they control their own behavior." With prom season around the corner, dresses are a hot topic right now. We asked Southland Patch Facebook fans to share their feelings on kids, dances and clothing. Here's a sample of what we heard. Oak Lawn Community High School students enjoy an enchanted evening of dining and dancing at senior prom.
Hundreds of Oak Lawn Community High School students hit the "read carpet" showing off their dresses, tiaras, tuxes and even matching colored gym shoes. Some students stamped their own personal style on their prom attire celebrating teenage moments. There were uniquely decorated cars, but most arrived at Ashton Place in Willowbook in limos. One grandfather chauffered his grandson in his vintage car to the prom. The theme of the 2012 Oak Lawn High prom was "Everything's Magic" and most students agreed that it was a magical evening. Add you own prom pictures by clicking on the "upload video/photos" button under the gallery. View the 2011 Oak Lawn Community High School prom gallery.

Off they went, leaving their limos and party buses for hours of dining and dancing in one unforgettable evening.
Students from Marist High School made their way to the top of the Palmer House Hilton last night in Downtown Chicago. The masquerade-themed prom took place next door to Marshall Fields, only minutes away from the Art Institute of Chicago and Millenium Park. And though they decided to leave the competition for prom king and queen in the past, the high school just celebrated its tenth prom at the hotel. Plenty of oven-fresh rolls and chocolate raspberry cake to go around!

A look at the dresses, food and fun at Oak Lawn Community High School's prom, "Would You Go With Me?"
As the clock struck 6 p.m., droves of Oak Lawn Community High school students arrived at Ashton Place in Willowbrook prepared to experience one of the biggest nights of their lives: prom. While the usual posing, primping and picture-taking occurred, strikingly missing from this this year's prom were the wallet busting dresses and expensive Hummer limos. Instead, many students opted to be dropped off in their parents' mini-vans, wear simpler dresses and do their own hair and makeup. Nevertheless, students still had fun as they lined up to eat a buffet filled with Chinese, Italian, and Mexican food and danced the night away to the beats of the Black Eyed Peas and Ke$ha.
