Oak Lawn Passes Out Winter Sports Awards

Oak Lawn boys bowling team stands tall at Spartans winter sports awards bash. Kevin McKeown named South Suburban Red Conference Coach of the Year for the second time in a row.

For the eighth time in the last 10 years, the Oak Lawn Community High School boys bowling team rolled to the top of the heap by earning a trip to the IHSA state tournament. The Spartans placed second in the Hinsdale South Sectional and 22nd in state tourney play at St. Clair Bowl in O’Fallon. Coach Kevin McKeown was named the South Suburban Red Conference Coach of the Year for the second time in a row. Cody Marek and Ryan Campin were named the team’s co-MVPs during Oak Lawn’s recent winter sports bash. Mike Pontrelli was awarded the Spartan boys bowling Sportsmanship Award. Marek, Campin and Dan Pfister were cited as all-conference picks. And the future looks bright for the Spartans, too. Oak Lawn also won the boys bowling sophomore …

Boys Bowling: Richards Places 9th in State Tourney, Completes Sweep of Oak Lawn

David Walker and Andrew Byland led Richards to a ninth-place finish in the IHSA boys bowling state tournament and a sweep of rival Oak Lawn in their season-ending series on the lanes.

For the third week in a row, Richards and Oak Lawn hooked up in a boys bowling dual. No, they didn't walk across the street to carry on their neighborhood rivalry. They happily made the trek downstate to compete in the IHSA state tournament Friday and Saturday at St. Clair Bowl in O'Fallon. Richards completed a conference, sectional and state tournament sweep of Oak Lawn by returning home with a ninth-place finish following two sizzling days of bowling. The Bulldogs, led by juniors David Walker and Andrew Byland, finished with a pinfall total of 12,007 and were 814 pins off the pace of state champion Andrew (12,821). Walker finished with a 12-game pinfall total of 2,574 and placed 19th individually to pace Richards. He posted a 214.5 …

Boys Bowling: Richards, Oak Lawn Raise the Stakes in Neighborhood Rivalry

Richards and Oak Lawn blasted to a 1-2 finish in the Hinsdale South Sectional on Saturday at Willowbrook Lanes. Next, the two neighborhood rivals will be bowling on the IHSA's biggest stage in the state tournament.

They’re taking their neighborhood rivalry on the road and next will be competing on the biggest stage in IHSA boys bowling. Richards and Oak Lawn powered to a 1-2 finish in the Hinsdale South Sectional on Saturday at Willowbrook Lanes. Both will bowl next in the IHSA state tournament Friday and Saturday (Jan. 27-28) at St. Clair Bowl in downstate O’Fallon. Richards, led by senior Zak Engstrom, finished with a pinfall total of 6,322 in Saturday’s sectional. The Bulldogs topped Oak Lawn (6,134) by almost 200 pins. Engstrom led Richards with a series of 1,349, good for third place in the individual medalist chase. Brian Powers of St. Joseph won the individual title with his 1,405. Altenburg, Reed, Niemiec at Head of All-Conference List

Spartan standouts reel in winter sports awards; Richards' Dominique Gaddis recognized as Player of Year in South Suburban Red.

For Oak Lawn High School, which competes in the South Suburban Conference, the boys basketball team sent two players to the all-conference team. Seniors Colin Altenburg and Leon Reed joined the team, while seniors Callen Moore and Anthony Johnson were named to the honorable mention team. The Oak Lawn girls basketball team sent three players to the all-conference team, seniors Kim Braasch, Kelly Foley and Bridget Niemiec, who also was named Patch’s Top Winter Sports Athlete, while senior Nicole Paplauski was named to the honorable mention team. * For the Oak Lawn wrestling team, 215-pounder Ryan Glab was an all-conference performer, while the boys bowling team sent Ryan Campin and Ken VandeWerken and the girls bowling team sent Brittany …

Oak Lawn Bowling Fundraiser Serves Dual Purpose

Spartans plan to celebrate successful season and hope to pocket money for the purchase of new equipment.

Rare is the occasion when anyone reaches perfection in any endeavor. When Oak Lawn sophomore Ryan Campin bowled a perfect game during a practice session, he also served notice of a perfect storm that was brewing for the Spartans. His 300 game was the kick-start to a season that saw the Oak Lawn boys bowling team go on to win the Hinsdale South Sectional and advance downstate for the fifth time in the last six years. Campin placed 43rd and fellow sophomore Ken VandeWerken followed hot on his heels in 50th place during the two-day competition at St. Clair Bowl in O’Fallon. Gimme 5: Future is Bright for Oak Lawn's Campin, VandeWerken

Ryan Campin and Ken VandeWerken are two of Oak Lawn's most talented bowlers--and they're only sophomores.

At Oak Lawn, there is a feeling that the next boys bowling season can't come soon enough. Two sophomores have the Spartans dreaming of making more noise in the postseason in the years to come. Ryan Campin and Ken VandeWerken advanced to the IHSA state tournament two weeks ago. Campin placed 43rd and  VandeWerken placed 50th in the competition at St. Clair Bowl in downstate O'Fallon. Oak Lawn coach Kevin McKeown said the two are special--in many ways. "What stands out most about these two individuals is just how talented they are at such a young age," McKeown said.  "With all the freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors that I've had, the skill that these two gentlemen have here is something that I rarely seen." Plainfield Central Wins Oak Forest Bowling Invite

Junior Josh Iwinski leads the Wildcats to victory over tough 16-team field; Oak Lawn takes second place.

Finally. The Plainfield Central boys bowling team Saturday hoisted the top prize after three top-five finishes earlier this season in tournaments. Led by Junior Josh Iwinski, the Wildcats won the 16-team Oak Forest Bowling Invite with a pinfall total of 6,208 over six games, beating second-place Oak Lawn by 155 pins. Iwinski, who also won the individual title with a final score of 1,367, spread the credit for the Wildcats' success around. "It's a team effort," he said. "We kept telling each other what to do and making adjustments. We stayed loud and we stayed motivated." Plainfield Central senior Matt Kulhanek finished fourth with a score of 1,340, and senior Raheem Johnson also averaged more than 200 with a score of 1,236, which was good …
