Families gather on Village Green to light candles and release sky lanterns in memory of Newtown, CT victims.
Oak Lawn residents gathered with their children at the Village Green on Friday in a show of hope against some dark times in our country by lighting candles and releasing sky lanterns in memory of the Newtown, CT shooting victims. Christmas lights will go dark on Village Green in honor of Newtown, CT shooting victims. Mayor asks residents to turn off Christmas lights at 7 p.m. Thursday. Cards also being collected to send to Newtown residents in show of community support.
The candlelight vigil honoring the Newtown, CT, shooting victims happens Thursday, Dec.27, on the Oak Lawn Village Green at Cook and Dumke. Residents are asked to begin arriving at 6:45 p.m. At approximately 7 p.m., the Christmas lights will go dark on the Village Green. Sign up for the Oak Lawn Patch newsletter and breaking news alerts. Oak Lawn residents are also asked to shut off their outdoor Christmas lights in conjunction with the community vigil until 7:26 p.m. -- one minute for each of the Sandy Hook School shooting victims. Local school officials spend Monday reviewing building security, helping students ease back into school on first day back since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings.
Oak Lawn’s public and parochial students returned to school on Monday to an increased police presence around local campuses on their first day back at school since last week's Connecticut school shootings. “The increased police presence was at all of our buildings just to serve as reassurance for our families,” Oak Lawn-Hometown Dist. 123 spokesman Ben Grey said. While students eased back into schoolwork and met with counselors, school administrators around Oak Lawn were reviewing building security, particularly external doors, to see if anything more could be done to prevent a possible shooter from entering their respective buildings.
