Oak Lawn Village Board Approves 2013 Budget, 4-3

The 2013 does not include property tax increases or possible fees from Advocate Christ Medical Center.

The Oak Lawn Village Board passed the 2013 general budget at a special village board meeting on Monday. Residents will not see a property tax increase for village services. The village is requesting an 11-percent levy of the Cook County property taxes collected for 2011 in Oak Lawn. Sign up for the Oak Lawn Patch newsletter and breaking news alerts. The $49,579,455 budget is less than the 2012 budget by $925,281. Part of the reason for the $13 million budget increase for 2012 was the rollover of such special funds into the general fund, including refuse, special events, the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund, and the sidewalk and streetlight fund. The village was able to come under last year’s budget because of reductions in certain …

Great that the village didn’t increase property tax rates but does anyone know if I can put my house in trust and claim a senior exemption (even if I am not a senior) in order to lower my taxes? Anyone know if this is legal? Andy S. any idea?   more ›

Village Board Approves Balanced Budget for 2012

Oak Lawn village trustees approve the budget, but clash on impact taxes for Advocate Christ Medical Center.

The Oak Lawn Village board passed the 2012 general budget Tuesday but not before dotting some “i’s” and ruffling the feathers of the village’s largest employer first. The village board approved a budget of $53,557,700 for next year—approximately $13.98 million more than 2011. The increase reflects several special funds rolled into the general fund, including refuse, special events, the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund and sidewalk and streetlight fund. The state constitution requires municipalities to pass a balanced budget. The village has been grappling with a projected $3 million budget shortfall that village manage Larry Deetjen has attributed to increased pension and public safety costs. To help close the gap, the village board …

Village Board Approves Lean, Mean Budget for 2011

For the sixth consecutive year, the village has come up with a budget that does not raise residents' property taxes.

The Oak Lawn Village Board approved the 2011 operating budget that, for the sixth consecutive year, does not call for a tax increase. The village also finished out the year with a balanced budget, with no deficit spending. Village trustees adopted an operating budget of $39,569,902 for fiscal year 2011 at their last village board meeting of the year on Tuesday. Trustee Bob Streit acted as president pro tem, filling in for Mayor Dave Heilmann, who was out of town caring for an ailing family member. "We've asked a great deal of our department heads and our employees," Streit said. "The budget that we are voting on tonight is balanced and does not require a tax increase. This budget includes all of the quality public services that this …

District 229 Requests 2010 ‘Balloon Levy’ to Capture All Possible Funds

Despite a requested 14.38-percent increase in the 2010 Oak Lawn Community High School District 229 tax levy, administrators say propery tax bills won't go up, up and away next year.

Oak Lawn Community High School District 229 approved a 14.38-percent increase in the 2010 tax levy, but expects to receive far less. "We're not going to get anywhere near that and we know that," said assistant superintendent Richard Hendricks after Wednesday's board of education meeting. "Who knows?" he added. "They (Cook County) change the rules midstream and maybe we get 3 or 4 percent. Stranger things have happened in this world, so you always ask for a little bit more than you expect." Hendricks said the school district is likely to only receive a 2-percent increase this year, because 2009 was the last of a 4-year referendum. In 2010, he explained, the school district was once again subject to taxing caps, as well as the district's …

D-123 to Hold Public Hearing on 2010 Tax Levy

The District 123 Board of Education will hold a public hearing on Dec. 13 to gain final approval for the 2010 tax levy. Although the board applies a ten percent balloon levy, actual tax rates are expected to remain flat.

Oak Lawn-Hometown School District 123 will hold a public hearing at its Dec. 13 School Board meeting before motioning to approve the 2010 Tax Levy by the last Tuesday in December, the county deadline. If the proposed levy is more than a five-percent increase over the previous year, then a public hearing must be held before the tax levy can be filed with Cook County. The reason for the public hearing is due to a 10-percent increase known as a balloon levy. The balloon levy is common practice and acts as a safety net should Equalized Assessed Valuation (EAV) and new property estimates drastically increase. Lauri Calabrese, assistant superintendent for business and operations said that based on recent information they received from the 2009…
