Best of Fall On the Green 2012: Video and Photo Highlights

See who was seen at Fall On the Green. Add your photos and video to ours.

Congratulations to the Village of Oak Lawn on another successful Fall On the Green. The weather held up for the most part and residents and visitors of all ages appeared to be enjoying themselves. Watch the video of two master corn roasters at work. Some residents wrote to Patch to complain about almost being burned by cigarettes on the dance floor in the Budweiser Beer Tent. There was a lot of smoking and dancing with lit cigarettes in the hands during the Tumbling Dice show on Friday night. See the Fall On the Green 2011 photo gallery. We thank the Oak Lawn village employees who did the yeoman’s work on coordinating, building and staging the 2012 edition plus dealing with crazy village board politics: Enjoy the video and photo gallery …

Wind gusts of up to 58mph were reported in Brems, IN. The Chicago Weather Center blog reported that the storm traveled 1,000 miles in 19 hours. Oak Lawn Village Manager Larry Deetjen said there were some trees down and power outages in the village. “Some portable generators were delivered to medical needs households and ComEd was alerted,” Deetjen said by email. Readers posted photos of Tuesday' storm damage on the Oak Lawn Patch Facebook page. The Marquette Bank sign at 104th Street and Cicero Avenue was knocked down by the wind. Downed trees near 108th …

Rock Around the Green with M&R Rush

M&R Rush storm the Green tonight (Sunday) for the second of the Oak Lawn Park District and Village of Oak Lawn's outstanding summer concert series.

Those of us with brain cells that survived the 1970s still remember the great AOR (album oriented rock) bands like Styx, Yes and Survivor. Tonight (Sunday) M&R Rush storm the village green with their classic rock sound in the second of the Village of Oak Lawn and Oak Lawn Park District's outstanding summer concert series. The boys were No. 45 with a bullet back in 1980 when their song “Rock and Roll Chicago” was chosen to front the Loop’s (there’s a blast from the past) first hometown album. Back in the day, M&R Rush frequently gigged at Chicago Fest, Loop Fest, Hammond Fest, Oak Lawn Fest (what????), Chicago Ridge Fest, Berwyn Fest and more, sharing the stage and opening shows for Styx, Survivor, Sammy Hagar, Judas Priest, Black Oak …

Where Could Oak Lawn Use Another Traffic Light?

Tell us where in Oak Lawn you think there should be another traffic light, stop sign, speed hump or other traffic control device.

Do you sometimes feel as if you're taking your life and those of children's into your hands trying to make a left turn on to one of Oak Lawn's main thoroughfares? And forget about crossing an intersection on 95th Street or Cicero Avenue where there isn't a traffic control device on the corner. If you could put a traffic light anywhere in Oak Lawn, where would that be? Perhaps your street needs a stop sign, speed hump or other traffic control device. We can think of a few locations in Oak Lawn where a traffic light or some other traffic calming device would come in handy, but we want to hear from you. Be the first on your block to know stuff. Subscribe to the O-L Patch newsletter and breaking news alerts. If you truly feel strongly about …

If a police cruiser would just direct traffic in and out of SIMMONS every morning and after school they will prevent a child from being killed. HAVE YOU SEEN IT OVER THERE? INSANE. Children running across the street in front of buses, cars going down Ridgeland, mad because of the backup pulling in to that dead end are whipping around the backed up traffic. NO SCHOOL ZONE SIGNS! Village Spends $453K To Settle With Law Firm for $470K

Village agrees to settle with former village attorney after costly litigation.

The Village of Oak Lawn agreed to end the dispute with its former legal counsel after some village trustees accused the firm of malpractice and overbillings. Oak Lawn trustees settled with Tressler, Soderstrom, Maloney & Priess for $500,000 during the village board’s executive session on Tuesday. Sign up for the O-L Patch newsletter and breaking news alerts. Tressler served as the village counsel from October 2005 to September 2009. The firm was fired amid complaints of rising legal fees, with some village board members criticizing Mayor Dave Heilmann for his reluctance to fire the Tressler attorneys because he had friends at the firm. The law firm hired to replace Tressler—Querrey and Harrow—was released in February after members of …

Thanks, Andy. Don't forget the infamous comment made by the then business development director. He told me to my face that if my wife and the other property owners on her block (South side of the 5200 block of 95th) persisted in their refusal to sell to Mid-America, the Village would either condemn them all or just build on that parking lot, deprive all of those businesses (the VFW, Deja Brew, …   more ›

Arborist: Emerald Ash Borer Infestation Will Lead to End of Ash Tree World

Heather Green, a forester and arborist in Oak Lawn, predicts all of the green ash and white ash trees in the metro-Chicago area will be wiped out by the infestation of the Emerald Ash Borer beetle.

Get ready for Ash-tree-mageddon. If it hasn’t already struck on your block or in your neighborhood, it will soon. And it will be like Armageddon. Take it from Village of Oak Lawn forester and arborist Heather Green. She predicts all of your green ash and white ash trees will die as a result of the invasion of the Emerald Ash Borer. The metallic green beetle is no larger than a penny but packs a wallop the size of a Red Army. In the case of the Emerald Ash Borer, Green’s findings are like those of experts elsewhere around the Midwest: Tiny beetle larvae deposited under tree bark feed on tree veins and prevent a supply of nutrients and water from being delivered to vital organs, thus leading to tree demise. So, how should you prepare for the…

Yes Tim, the protocol for trees over 25" are to have a professional Arborist apply compared to owner "Pouring it" themselves. It used to be 15” before approved double dose. Arborist soil injects it with better equipment or trunk inject, and still last one year, but has better uptake. Biggest problem was as tree size got bigger, dose rate would have to also rise, and this was not being done, thus …   more ›

Hickey, 43, of the 5400 block of West Otto Place, was charged with driving under the influence and other traffic violations.
