Program Announced for Thursday's Candlelight Vigil for School Shooting Victims

Christmas lights will go dark on Village Green in honor of Newtown, CT shooting victims. Mayor asks residents to turn off Christmas lights at 7 p.m. Thursday. Cards also being collected to send to Newtown residents in show of community support.

The candlelight vigil honoring the Newtown, CT, shooting victims happens Thursday, Dec.27, on the Oak Lawn Village Green at Cook and Dumke. Residents are asked to begin arriving at 6:45 p.m. At approximately 7 p.m., the Christmas lights will go dark on the Village Green. Sign up for the Oak Lawn Patch newsletter and breaking news alerts. Oak Lawn residents are also asked to shut off their outdoor Christmas lights in conjunction with the community vigil until 7:26 p.m. -- one minute for each of the Sandy Hook School shooting victims. The program features recorded music, prayer and candles. The mayor is looking for children to volunteer to read aloud a Sandy Hook student or teacher's name during the vigil. Candlelight Vigil Planned for Michele Peters Who Died of Gunshot Wound

Questions remain surrounding death of former Hometown woman who was found fatally shot in her Chicago Heights home.

The only thing wrong with Michele Vivian Peters was that she was perfect. She never went out partying with the girls, drank or abused drugs. Except for playing in an adult summer softball league with the Oak Lawn Park District, Michele stayed home with her two boys, Georgie, 7, and Alexander, 15 months. “Those boys were everything to her,” Catherine Peters said of her daughter. “She was perfect. We are so lost.” Peters’ world changed forever the morning she received a phone call from the Chicago Heights police asking her to come to the police station. “It was 4 a.m. I was sound asleep,” Peters said. “The police said they couldn’t tell me the reason over the phone, just come to the station.
