As expected when I scanned the barcode it was worth the lowest value of $2 so I nabbed a few bags of top soil for a total bill of 15 cents. Had another one that a neighbor tossed, also good for $2 so gave it to another shopper. Asked 2 more neighbors, both …   more ›

The Plaza appears to be on the front burner again with a new group eyeing the property for redevelopment. Connect with Patch: Evergreen Park / Beverly-Mt. Greenwood / Oak Lawn This time, it’s DeBartolo Development LLC, the Tampa, FL-based inventor of the enclosed regional shopping center which intends to pump $111 million into the aging shopping mall, that includes demolishing many of the existing stores. Local Food Pantries Get Help Stocking Up

Local food pantry staff say that their shelves have grown bare as demand continues to rise.

The holidays are always a busy time for local food pantries and this year has been particularly demanding. Those who run local food pantries say the number of area families in need has risen sharply over the last several years and every donation helps as they look to supply holiday provisions. With that in mind, Shirey Cadillac in Oak Lawn offered customers and employees a chance to give back to their community this holiday season. The dealership donated hundreds of items to the Village Pantry Coalition in Evergreen Park and Pilgrim Faith United Church of Christ in Oak Lawn. Jolene Churak, president of the Village Pantry Coalition, says that the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas is a time when the food supply can dip. Local …

Lack of Black Workers Leads To Protest of Western Avenue Construction Site

African American civil rights leaders say the lack of black laborers and contractors at a large Evergreen Park retail development needs to be addressed.

On one side of Western Avenue Evergreen Park police officers stood in a line in front of an under-construction retail development. On the other side of the street, holding signs and standing in solidarity, were black contractors, civil rights leaders and supporters.  The two sides were lined up at 92nd Street and Western Avenue because Ed Gardner, 87, the famed founder of Soft Sheen hair care, is tired of the lack of construction jobs and contract opportunities for local African Americans. The retail development, which includes a planned Menards and Meijer, might be today's focal point, but the issue is a much larger one. "It cuts at the heart of our kitchen tables," said Bishop Tavis Grant, the National Field Director for the Rainbow Push…
