Bury Takes the Oath

Dr. Sandra Bury gets sworn in as Oak Lawn Mayor, passes ordinance creating an ethics and legislative committee.

Taking the oath of office in a resolute voice, Dr. Sandra Bury was sworn in as the new village president of Oak Lawn, bringing a bitter end to the Unity Party-years that often resembled a bad reality TV show instead with board members constant bickering. Sign up for the Oak Lawn Patch newsletter and follow us on Facebook. The new village elected officials took their oaths after sweeping into office last month, beating a two-term mayor and his slate of unknowns. Former Mayor Dave Heilmann was a no-show for the transfer of power to his successor and four new trustees. Trustee Carol Quinlan (Dist. 5) had mentioned at the last village board meeting that she would be out of town on business for Tuesday’s swearing in. No explanation was offered …

It also verifies that the conspiracies continue! Perhaps one of their own people leaked it. I saw it and it looks like the work of TP. Of course, all of his people are great and others, such as Alex's are not so great. Why wouldn't the others release it?   more ›

Oak Lawn’s New Mayor, Trustees Sworn In Tonight

Out with the old, in with the new, village board members will change seats and get down to business.

A new era in Oak Lawn begins as the village’s first woman to be elected mayor takes her oath of office at tonight’s (Tuesday’s) regular village board meeting. Cook County Judge Denise K. Filan will administer the oath of office to the new village board members, including political novice Dr. Sandra Bury, who beat two-term incumbent Mayor Dave Heilmann last month. Sign up for the Oak Lawn Patch newsletter and follow us on Facebook. In their last action together as a village board, the Heilmann and outgoing trustees Cindy Trautsch (Dist. 1), Tom Duhig (Dist. 4) and Tom Phelan (Dist. 6) will approve the minutes from last month’s regular and special village board meetings. Room has been left on tonight’s agenda for remarks from the outgoing …

95th Street Corridor Survey, Christ Hospital Easement Highlight Village Board Agenda

The Oak Lawn Village Board will have one more shot at tackling important village issues before the April 9 election.

And now the end is near, and as they face the final curtain before the April 9 election, tonight is the last village board meeting that Trustee Tom Phelan (Dist. 6) and perhaps a few others will have to suffer gladly. Read the Frank Sinatra Memorial ‘My Way’ village board agenda. So let the record show they did it their way. Here’s what we’ll be watching: The 2012 Fire and Public Safety Coloring Contest Safety Winners – Oak Lawn elementary school students Kayla O’Brien, Aleksander Petrovic, Mila Revell, Hiba Quarerhni, Andy Schroeder and Alessandra Vicenteno will be picking up their awards in what is likely to be the highlight of the evening for their colorful interpretations of public safety. 95th Street Corridor Plan Citizen Survey – …

'Dear Mr. Heilmann ...'

Oak Lawn-resident John Crivellone, speaking on behalf of a concerned group of citizens and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, pens an email to Mayor Dave Heilmann regarding his scheduling conflicts.

Dear Mr. Heilman: A group of concerned citizens, along with local business people have asked me to be spokesman and organizer of the candidates' forum since the Oak Lawn Chamber of Commerce has removed themselves from this responsibility. However, the men from the [Johnson-Phelps] Veterans of Foreign Wars have volunteered to sponsor and let us use their meeting room as a venue. Moreover, the prestigious Union League Club has offered to be an impartial moderator. It seems there is ongoing conflict with your scheduling. I know you said you have a fundraiser this Thursday. Therefore, in order to once again accommodate your schedule we will move the candidates forum to next Wednesday, March 27th, from 7 to 9 p.,. at Johnson-Phelps VFW Post …

Residents Trying to Salvage O-L Candidates' Forum

The Union League Club says it will moderate a village board candidates' forum as early as March 21 but residents need to find a group to sponsor it. Mayor says not to let lack of sponsor stop him from debating mayoral challenger, Sandra Bury.

Some local residents have taken up a collection to hold a candidates’ forum after the Oak Lawn Chamber dropped the gauntlet when it couldn’t get village board candidates to fix a date. The date of the consolidated election is April 9. Sign up for the Oak Lawn Patch newsletter and follow us on Facebook. The chamber canceled the forum that was to have been held earlier this month when less than half of the 14 candidates running for village board seats responded. “We’re going to try our best to salvage it,” Oak Lawn-resident John Crivellone said. “If the chamber doesn’t have the testicular fortitude than we’ll pick up the pieces.” Crivellone, a member of Masonic Lodge 1166, had hoped that the Oak Lawn Masons could sponsor the rescheduled …

Which one of Bury's campaign people is the one who owns a house that two brothers got from their father, but even though the brothers own the property, they get the senior citizen exemption? Whoever it is, all their neighbors pay their fair share of taxes, but these guys skate on a large portion of what they should rightfully pay to the county. There's Dr. Bury's transparency at work. Or is that …   more ›

Police Cameras, SW Highway and Central Project Weigh on Village Board Agenda

See what's on the agenda--both public and hidden--for Tuesday's Oak Lawn Village Board meeting.

With just one Oak Lawn Village Board meeting left until the election, tonight’s less-is-more agenda is short enough so that candidates can finish up early and go back out campaigning. See tonight’s less-is-more village board agenda. Here’s what we’ll be watching: Southwest Highway and Central Avenue Traffic Signalization Project: Will Cook County Commissioner John Daley (11th District) pop in at another Oak Lawn Village Board meeting? The ‘stealth Daley’ has made it to the last two meetings, to correct rhetoric and announce that the county would pick up the $1.2 million tab for the long awaited left turn lane at the corner of Southwest Highway and Central Avenue. Tonight, trustees will vote on resolutions for land acquisition and an …

Oak Lawn Lands Mariano's Fresh Market at 111th Street

Mariano's expected to jobs, tax revenue and more upscale stores to redevelopment project that was "long in coming" to Oak Lawn, mayor says.

Build it and they will come. That’s what the Village of Oak Lawn is banking on with the signing of Mariano’s Fresh Market at 111th Street and Cicero Avenue. Mayor Dave Heilmann officially confirmed the lease agreement with the upscale grocer at Tuesday’s village board meeting after news of the deal was leaked earlier in the day by Patch. “One of the most important parts of getting someone like Mariano’s who has sales that are that strong is that it draws other people to the site,” Heilmann said. “If you’re getting a Mariano’s you’re doing very well.” Mariano's Fresh Market is owned by Milwaukee-based Roundy's Supermarkets and has several locations in the Chicago-area helmed by former Dominck’s CEO Bob Mariano. A Marino’s Fresh Market is …

Possible Announcement of 111th Street Mystery Tenant, Sewer Rehab 'Anchor' Agenda

See what's on the agenda--both public and hidden--for Tuesday's Oak Lawn Village Board meeting.

After Cook County Commissioner John Daley’s surprise pop-in at the last village board meeting to correct some trustee rhetoric, the Oak Lawn Village Board will tackle an infrastructure-packed agenda at tonight's meeting. Sign up for the Oak Lawn Patch newsletter and follow us on Facebook. This is among the handful of meetings that are left when we’ll see the Rutles together, and probably our only chance to see any kind of debate before the upcoming election since there doesn’t appear to be any interest among the candidates to hold a forum. Read the waste-solids-packed village board agenda.  Here’s what we’ll be watching: 111th Street/Cicero Development – Will tonight be the night when the village board announces the mystery anchor tenant …

I'm ok with Trader Joe's but I think its over rated. Willing to give this Mariano's place a chance. From what i've read, they are new but are doing well in other locations. Main thing is that we get a business that can sustain itself there for the long term.   more ›

Trustees Vote To Divide Remaining Build America Bonds

Each district to receive about $750,000 each for summer infrastructure repair projects as Build American bonds come to an end.

Oak Lawn trustees voted to divide remaining funds for infrastructure improvements equally among the village’s six districts, delaying the traffic signalization project at Central Avenue and Southwest Highway indefinitely. Sign up for Oak Lawn Patch breaking news alerts. Following an appearance by Cook County Commissioner John Daley (11th District) at Tuesday’s village board meeting to clarify remarks made by another Oak Lawn trustee that the county no longer considered the project a priority, the village board postponed voting on the project until it could discuss allocating the remaining Build America bonds. The village has until 2016 to utilize the available funds through Cook County, which would pick up 50 percent of the costs for …

How about making it so you can't turn left off Central and making it a school safety zone with flashing lights?? Very simple solution. Making a left turn lane would require additional surface area (which would put cars closer to those houses on the north side of SW Hgwy) or tie up traffic more since an existing lane would need to be dedicated to this.   more ›
