PPatrickJane, to answer your questions,1) no I've never done coke. 2) As a former teacher, I was trained on noticing the symptoms of drug abuse, but there's few "sure signs" of using a certain drug. If I saw a teacher snorting in the bathroom, you BET I'd report it.

You sound from your shrill, ignorant justification for drug users in public ed being protected to be a public school teacher, perhaps in 230. Tell me, why does your union oppose random drug testing as every REAL professional does such as nurses and engineers? No evidence, no crime, right?

Finally, I've published my name many times in these blogs. I don't hide. Have YOU got the guts to give your real name, or are you just a sniping coward with personal attacks from the shadows? I suspect the latter.

Finally, I thought the substance abuse issues in 230 had been solved, but apparently not. About 10 years ago I did some subsitituting there, and I ran into one of my former teachers. She had far more energy in her fifities than I remember her having in her twenties. I remarked about this to a student, and they gave me the "coke sniffing" sign. A number of other students brought up the same thing. Apparently it was an "open secret" that some teachers were coked up at school.

Under the current policies, teachers are only drug tested at hire, unless someone reports them as appearing to be intoxicated. Apparently that rarely, if ever, happens.

I've had kids in the district for the last 8 consecutive years, and I must admit I haven't seen or heard of any sign of a problem, but this incident may indicate a problem still exists.

That being said, it would be a tragedy if a faculty or staff member exhibited the kind of problem that appears to be the case here, and didn't do anything about it for the good of the employee.

Is anyone else aware of whether this may NOT be an isolated incident in 230? No names please.

BTW, I understand the Stagg students were arrested by the Palos Hills police for "starting a riot" even though no physical harm to stuednts or Staff nor property damage occurred!

For Chrissakes, what would "Palos Hills finest" do if they had to deal with a REAL violent "riot"? It seems they have WAY too much time on their hands......

I truly hope not, Davey. Getting intoxicated on a school sponsored event would be cause for a student to get a long suspension if not expelled. I would expect the consequences for a faculty/staff/ administrator would be far more severe.

Last week a bunch of kids (seniors) got into a water balloon fight at the Stagg HS lunch room (no bleech or other "unmentionable" things in the balloons) and they were given 10 day suspensions and denied the priviledge of being in the graduation ceremonies.

If the district is that severe with behavior of throwing harmless water balloons, how severely should faculty and staff be disciplined for risking their and innocents' lives by DUI while participating in school activities? I'll bet if he was at a school event we paid him for his vehicle expenses so he was probably "on the clock" for a salaried faculty member.

Even more troubling is that it's unlikely this is the first time he was in this condition. Perhaps some "tough love" with a demotion, suspension, or other disciplinary action could've saved his life. Preventable tragedies are perhaps the worst ones to suffer.

Gee, I wonder if the increased pull over rate could have something to do with increasing numbers of African Americans COMMITTiNG CRIMES in Oak Lawn and EP?

It would be interesting to get statistics as to how many crimes (with arrest and conviction) in OL and EP are committed by African Americans, Hispanics, people from the Middle East and other "Chicagoans" compared with Caucasian residents of OL and EP.

The data should be out there. The question is whether any paper of social networking news organization would have the guts to publish it.

Here's an idea! Why not have a COUNTER demonstration protesting Chicagoans coming into OL and EP and committing battery, assault, DUIs, rape, murder and robbery? Now THERE'S case of civil rights being violated!

I really hope that his untimely demise be used as a 'teachable moment" in the community. EVERY memorial activity for him, EVERY charitable event held in his honor should be focused on fighting the conditions that allow for people to drive while intoxicated.

I'd also like to know if someone served him and let him drive in his condition. If it was a bar, they should be held accountable. If it was a coworker in 230, they should 'fess up and give talks to students about the guilt and pain they feel from contributing to what appears to have been a very good man's death.

The question now is whether this will be used to possibly prevent this from happening again, or be "swept under the rug".

This also opens up another question. Waht disciplinary action is taken against faculty and staff if they are convicted of a DUI? Are they required to get counseling and be put on "probation", or does the district put on blinders?

Ingwersen can't draw, his content is biased, lacking in wit, and banal, and his political and cultural knowledge is somewhere between a 10th grader who has yet to take US government and a drug addled indigent.

Can someone explain to me how, with so many bright, insightful journalists who can draw at least as poorly as Chuck in the unemployment line, this guy can keep drawing a paycheck?

Gee, one WHOLE day notice! They must REALLY want taxpayers to turn out for this one! I suspect union members in the district got much more advanced notice. Please notice the timing. At 4:30 on Monday most taxpayers are working and can't attend as they could if it were held at 7pm. This "forum" is set up to get feedback from the 135 teachers unions, NOT the taxpaying community. Basically, this will all be about what the Dem legislators are doing to get the unions the best deal possible on the backs fo the taxpayers.

Since that is the case, I guess making it as easy for the unions to attend, and as difficult as possible for taxpayers to attend, makes the timing make sense!

What is district 135 doing by sponsoring a propaganda fest like this? Please note:
    1) NO Republicans were invited to attend and participate.
    2) NO representatives of conservative think tanks like the Illinois Policy Institute or the Heartland Institute were invited to attend.
    3) Ralph Martire and his oxymoronically named "Center for Tax and Budget Accountability" Organization will be spewing their propaganda. For those who are not aware, CTBA is almost entirely funded by unions and actually drafts legislation for the unions. Their history has been full advocacy for union interests when those interests conflict with those of the students, community, and especially taxpayers.

Gee, I wonder what the chances are of having a second forum sponsored by 135 with groups advocating for the students and taxpayers?LOL

This is all about conditioning the community about getting it used to the idea of raising property taxes to pay for the Democratic legislatures pension "cost shift" plan which will allow Springfield to keep funding its corrupt pork, patronage and entitlement spending by shifting pension costs to suburban taxpayers.

Madigan can count of Burke, Cunningham, Hastings to support him against us in this charade. I guess we get what we deserve when we vote for these clowns!

It's always amusing to see how these stories avoid the obvious. How about an 'educator" figuring out a way of remote learning to avoid the pollution of all those busses and communicable diseases from common school space, and creating a way a single teacher could access dozens, hundreds or thousands of students simulataneously? hoe about remote learning? Ooops, that would mean less $120K union teachers for nine months work, wouldn't it? It probably woould come too close to "home schooling" for corrupt lefty politican's tastes.

How about coming up with biodegradable packaging so that 85% of our solid waste could be put in the back yard with an environmentally benign deodorant that would minimize use of landfills and energy inefficient refuse pickup?

Ooops again! That would reduce the need for those union sanitation workers and those sanitation company owners in "this thing of ours" outfit who are so generous to our pols.

The list goes on and on. The "green" solutions are there. The problems are the corrupt government-union- crony capitalist complex!
