Police Investigate Saturday's Chuck E. Cheese's Shooting

Man shot at was targeted for gang ties, cops said.

OAK LAWN, IL, Dec. 24, 2011 -- The 20-year-old man who was sitting in his car in the east parking lot of Chuck E. Cheese's restaurant in Oak Lawn on Saturday was a self-admitted gang member, Oak Lawn police said.

The 20-year-old had told Patch on Saturday that he was bringing a birthday cake back to his car after attending his child's birthday party at the restaurant at 4301 W. 95th St. He was sitting in his car when shots rang out and dove beneath the steering wheel as bullets were fired into the side of the car.

Police said that two subjects walked up to the car and started shooting.

Division Chief Michael Kaufmann, of the Oak Lawn Police Department, said that the man, a resident of Chicago, was an admitted gang member.

"He feels he may been targeted by rival gang members," Kaufmann said. "This is not a random incident. He has a gang history in Chicago."

Police are currently looking at surveillance video from inside Chuck E. Cheese's and around the parking lot.

The incident is being investigated as an aggravated assault.
