41 Years Later, Martinelli's Still Welcomes the Back-to-School Crowds

Patch stops by Martinelli's, a 6,000-square foot store that has sold uniforms to generations of area schoolchildren.

For generations in Evergreen Park has been a destination for parents and children checking off those back-to-school lists.

Generations of kids have been outfitted in plaid skirts and jumpers, or creased slacks thanks to this southwest suburban institution.

"As we get closer to school starting, every day will get a little more crazy," said Joan Martinelli, the store's president.

The 6,000-square foot retail store has seen decades of back-to-school rushes.

Martinelli says many educators find a uniform or dress code adds to the learning environment and plays a major role in students' behavior.

"I would definitely say that the schools testify that when the children are in uniform the behavior is a little more disciplined," Martinelli said, noting that she has spoken to some principals about the issue. "When some schools have changed to uniform, that has been the result."

Martinelli's employees tend to sell uniforms with a couple of years' growing room for the students and the store does alterations, she said, to help parents get the best fit for their ever-growing students.

"We want the parents to get really long wear out of them," Martinelli explained.

And the store doesn't only carry school uniforms. Shoes, dresses and accessories for various occasions are also available. The store not only sees a back-to-school surge, but business also picks up around holidays, such as Christmas and Easter.
