Volunteers and Communities Celebrate as New Cal-Sag Trail Work Begins
The 26-mile trail will run from Lemont through the Southland almost to the Indiana state line.
The Friends of the Cal-Sag Trail, joined by community leaders, celebrated the realization of a dream with a Saturday ceremony in Alsip to break ground on the $20 million Cal-Sag Trail.
A stretch of the 26-mile trail from Alsip to Lemont will be completed this fall. The project has been more than 10 years in the making. When finished, the trail will run from Lemont almost to the Indiana state line, and connect with a 100-mile network of trails.
"It’s really exciting for me to see everyone else’s excitement, to see their reaction to it,” said Steve Buchtel, executive director for The Friends of Cal-Sag Trail.

The federal government will cover 80 percent of the cost, with the remainder coming from state and local governments.
Debbie Stoffregen, president of the Friends of Cal-Sag Trail, told Sun-Times Media that the trail was first discussed at Lake Katherine in Palos Heights 10 years ago over pizza. A group of volunteers formed the non-profit organization and the trail has been a passion of theirs ever since.
