Car Burglaries Pick Up With Approaching Holidays

Five car burglaries in three days reported in Oak Lawn.

MONDAY, Nov. 12

Juvies Charged in GPS Heist

Oak Lawn police assisted Burbank cops in investigating two juveniles alleged to be responsible for swiping a GPD navigation unit from a car parked in the 9300 block of South Sayre Avenue. Police spoke to the resident around 1:27 a.m. and asked if he was missing a GPS unit. The resident looked through the car window and saw that the center console and had been opened and rifled through. The glove box was also open. Officers said the resident was unaware anything was missing from his car until police contacted him. The resident said that two GPS units were missing and was asked to go to Burbank police to identify them. Burbank police had two male juveniles, both 17, from Hickory Hills.

Stolen Tools, GPS Unit

Police were on patrol when they noticed an open car door of a vehicle parked in the 5200 block of West Kimball Place around 11:30 p.m. The owner said he parked his car in front of his house about an hour before and could not remember if he locked his car doors. Upon inspecting his car, the owner reported his GPS and charger missing, along with a bag full of tools valued at $300.

Triple Hit

Burglars hit three employees’ cars parked behind Fox’s Pizza Restaurant at 9240 S. Cicero Ave. sometime before 7:30 p.m. Thieves smashed each car’s window and grabbed contents from inside the cars, including military orders, personal papers, an iPhone and clothing. Employees were alerted to the thefts when a customer brought in an employee’s purse that he had found in the parking lot, police said. Total damages of the three cars are estimated at $750.
