A 35-year-old man reported that his former roommate who he described as a “drifter” entered his apartment and stole a bunch of his stuff sometime before 8 p.m. Jan. 3.
responded to a call of a burglary at an apartment building on the 10300 S. Komensky Ave. Officers said the man found his apartment door unlocked after he came home from visiting his girlfriend over the New Year’s weekend.
Gone are a 46-inch TV, cable box, DVD player, Playstation, a pair of game consoles, 20 video games, RCA surround speakers, a digital camera, tools and some of the drifter’s clothing that had been left in the closet.
Police said the man’s daughter’s dresser had been rifled through and some inexpensive jewelry was taken.
The man told police he kicked his ex-roommate out a month ago after a falling out between the roommate and his wife. The wife told the roommate that he couldn’t live at the apartment anymore. He never got the key back from his ex-roommate who knew of his weekend plans to be away from the apartment.
According to reports, the man told police his ex-roommate uses drugs and had gotten in trouble before stealing from family and friends.
Police said the ex-roommate apparently felt comfortable enough in the apartment to take food from the refrigerator and make a pot of coffee in the coffeemaker. The man thinks his ex-roommate is staying somewhere on the South Side.
The missing items totaled $1,970.
