The man told police he kicked his ex-roommate out a month ago after a falling out between the roommate and his wife. The wife told the roommate that he couldn’t live at the apartment anymore. He never got the key back from his ex-roommate who knew of his weekend plans to be away from the apartment.

According to reports, the man told police his ex-roommate uses drugs and had gotten in trouble before stealing from family and friends.

Police said the ex-roommate apparently felt comfortable enough in the apartment to take food from the refrigerator and make a pot of coffee in the coffeemaker. The man thinks his ex-roommate is staying somewhere on the South Side.

The missing items totaled $1,970.
