Fire Damages Garage and Corvette

Village fire officials eyeing electrical transformer as possible cause of garage fire.

Fire erupted in a detached garage of a home on the 10500 block of South Kostner Avenue on Saturday afternoon.

The fire heavily damaged the garage itself and a red Corvette that was parked inside, Battalion Chief Mike Jensen said.

Oak Lawn firefighters responded to the scene around 3 p.m. The fire was struck within moments of their arrival. No injuries were reported.

“The fire was fully involved in the interior when we arrived,” Jensen said.

The fire also caused damage to a neighbor’s garage and fence directly behind the home on the 10500 block of South Kolin Avenue.

Jensen said Oak Lawn fire stations 1 and 3 battled the blaze, with backup provided by the Evergreen Park Fire Department. The fire completely burned through the garage, leaving just the roof and support beams.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Fire investigators were looking at an electrical transformer directly above the garage.

Jensen said he did not know if the transformer directly contributed to the cause of the fire or if the fire damaged it.

A ComEd truck arrived as we were leaving.
