Firefighters Battle Fifth Structural Fire in Two Weeks

Minimal damage caused to detached garage set up as living arrangement, Oak Lawn fire chief says.

Oak Lawn Fire and Rescue were kept busy fighting their fifth structural fire within the past two weeks.

Around 3:47 a.m. Wednesday, firefighters rolled up to the 10000 block of South 52nd Avenue where moderate smoke was showing from a detached garage.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze relatively quickly.

Oak Lawn Fire Chief George Sheets said that no vehicles were stored in the garage. A living type arrangement was set up with couches, TV and refrigerator.

The fire was confined to the garage, with minimal damage to the garage and its contents. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, according to the fire chief.

Sheets said it was fifth “working” structure fire within the past two weeks. He cautions everyone to be aware of the use of candles, space heaters, open flame and discarding of smoking materials.  Residents requesting information home fire safety should contact the fire department at 708-499-7700.
