The South Suburban Emergency Response Team raided an apartment full of sleeping adults and children early in the morning of Dec. 16.

The police task force arrived at the building around 5:22 a.m. and knocked on the door. After announcing themselves and receiving no response, police forced their way into the apartment, the report said.

Police presented Smith with a copy of the search warrant and asked him if there was any contraband in the apartment. Officers said that Smith knew only of some pot on the computer desk in the family room.

The woman took the children downstairs to another unit occupied by family members. The other adults in the apartment were cleared for outstanding warrants in the crime database and were released without being charged.

Smith was taken to the while the search warrant was being executed.

Oak Lawn’s police canine searched the residence and alerted police to several locations where drugs might be present, the report said.

According to the report, police found one clear plastic bag containing cocaine and three clear plastic bags of cannabis in a drawer. More cannabis was found on the computer desk, along with four digital scales, a metal grinder, a ledger and a shoebox containing several small plastic bags for packing cannabis, loose cannabis and seeds weighing approximately 10 grams.

Police said that the contraband found during the search tested positive for cocaine and marijuana.

Smith had $307 cash and his cell phone contained several “drug-related messages,” the report said.

After he was read his rights, officers said Smith admitted to selling pot but that he was holding the cocaine for a friend.

Smith appeared at a bond hearing the next day.
