POLICE: Accused Shoplifters Swipe Dollar Store Trinkets, Panties

Oak Lawn police responded to a retail theft at Kmart at 4101 W. 95th St. around 7 p.m. When they arrived, Myjken Maddisson Moore, 24, of Oak Lawn, was in the custody of store security officers. Police said Moore was observed walking around the store with an unidentified man. Store security officers spotted her picking bras and underwear off the racks on the sales floor and allegedly stuffing them under her shirt. Moore carried the underwear to a fitting room; when she left, she did not have any of the items, reports said. Store security checked the fitting room and there was no clothing in it. Police said that Moore left the store without paying for the merchandise. When confronted by store security, police said she took the items out of her purse and handed them to security officer. Reports said that Moore walked out of the store with four pairs of underwear and two bras, valued at $75. She was issued a village citation for retail theft and has a hearing at Oak Lawn Village Hall on July 17.

Woman Who Distracts Cashier Nabbed for Retail Theft

A store manager says that three women walked into the Dollar Tree at 8727 S. Ridgeland Ave., distracted sales associates while their accomplice walked out of the store with an unknown amount of merchandise around 4:45 p.m. Police said that one of the women told the cashier that she “needed to outside to the car to get her money” to pay for a bag of groceries. A second woman asked the cashier for a job application, as their accomplice walked out of the store with stolen merchandise, reports said. The store manager tried stop the accomplice before she and an unidentified male drove off in a white car. While doing so, the two women inside the store left on foot. As police searched for the women, a witness said he saw two women were standing outside the Burger King at 87th Street and Ridgeland Avenue. Police stopped the woman and asked for their ID. A woman identified as Shawnique K. Cartagena, 18, of Chicago, gave police a false name and date of birth, and provided a South Dakota driver’s license, reports said. Another officer stayed with the women while police went to the store to bring store employees to the scene. The employees positively identified both women as helping their accomplice steal merchandise, police said. Informing Cartagena that her name was not showing up in the police database, police said that she admitted to lying to them. The other woman was released without being charged and warned not return to Dollar Tree. Properly identified, Cartagena’s name had an active warrant for failure to appear in court on a retail theft charge out of Lake County, police said. She was taken into custody. Cartagena’s next court appearance is July 1.
