Woman’s Ride Ripped Off While at Church Service

A 2011 Hyundai Sonata was stolen from a church parking lot while its owner was inside attending a church service on June 17.

According to reports, the 52-year-old owner parked the car in the First Church of God parking lot at 4600 W. 111th St. for morning services. When she came back out, the car was gone.

said the woman was current on her payments and that no one else had a key or her permission to use the car. Officers found no signs of forced entry into the car or broken glass in the lot.

Upon questioning, the woman told police that she was estranged from her daughter but had seen her recently.

Police said the woman contacted them at the station later in the day to say that her car’s spare key was missing from a safe box. Her daughter had spent the night at her house three weeks ago and had texted her mother the day before, expressing interest in attending church with her.

Her daughter texted her the next morning saying she wouldn’t be able to make the morning church service.

Oak Lawn police ran the daughter’s name and learned that she had been stopped in a Chevy in Hometown at 11:40 a.m., along with two men and a child. The daughter told Hometown police they were going to church at 111th Street and Cicero. The adults were released without citations.

The woman said that her daughter had been spending time with a man in Blue Island who police said is a listed gang member.

Hometown police did not know if the man was in the car when it was stopped. The woman said she would file charges.

were called to St. James Place in reference to a fight in the alley. When police arrived, they found a 20-year-old woman lying on the ground next to her car, crying loudly around 1:52 a.m. Police said the woman appeared to be intoxicated and was surrounded by her friends who told police that she had been “clotheslined.” The woman and her friends encountered a street disturbance after leaving the bar. Reports said the woman verbally intervened as she stood near her car. A man described in his early 20s, with a beard and mustache, and long black hair, ran in her direction. The woman said she thought he was going to run past her but instead he extended his left arm. Police said the man intentionally hit her in the chest and knocked her to the ground, where she smacked her head on the pavement. The woman’s friends ran after the man but he got away. Witnesses were not able to provide the man’s name or further information to police.
