POLICE: Former Property Owner Accused of Trespassing on Old Building

Harold J. Slinkman, of SKS Properties, charged after police say he violated a court order prohibiting him from entering former property.

The former owner of an apartment building was charged with criminal trespassing when he was found on the premises after the property had turned over to a new owner, reports said.

Harold J, Slinkman, 70, of the 2900 block of Prairie Avenue in Brookfield, was charged on Jan. 31.

Around 6:30 a.m., were called to the apartment building in the 9300 block of South Harlem Avenue in response to a reported theft. Officers were advised that the former owner of the property had fled the building in a van registered to Slinkman, police said.

The custodian of the property told police he was working in the laundry room when Slinkman entered carrying two empty blue bags. Police said the custodian at first thought Slinkman was the washer repairman until he noticed the back of 70-year-old’s jacket that had an “SKS Properties” decal.

The custodian said, “hold on, you know you’re not supposed to be anywhere on this property,” according to the report.

Slinkman, who had opened two coin collection holders, replied, “OK, I didn’t take anything. I’m leaving right now,” the report said.

Police said the custodian followed Slinkman outside, then watched him get into his van and drive away with his headlights off. The custodian copied down the van’s license plate number and called police, who verified the van as being registered to the Brookfield man.

While speaking to the janitor, police said Slinkman arrived back in his van and admitted to being inside the building.

The custodian contacted his supervisor, the new property manager. Police said the manager wished to press charges. The manager authorized his employee to sign a complaint and accept three sets of keys from the former property owner.

Police said they also learned that SKS Properties appeared in court on Jan. 24, where a court order was issued prohibiting the former owners from entering the apartment building, and two other properties, on Harlem Avenue because they are now owned by a new company.

According to the Cook County Recorder of Deeds a claim was filed against the property by Acorn Loan Aquisition Venture III LLP in November. The Cook County Assessor’s office also lists it as currently being reviewed for future improvements.

The custodian did not believe that Slinkman had removed any money from the washer coin collectors, reports said.

Slinkman was taken to the Oak Lawn police station where he was charged and released on bond. His van also was towed.

On the report, Slinkman gave his occupation as property owner, and listed his business address as SKS Properties, 7951 Ogden Ave. in Lyons.

His next court appearance is March 12.
