Snapshot of November Vehicle Breakins

Ten car burglaries were reported in Oak Lawn during the month of November, a majority from unlocked vehilces.

Thieves got an early start on their “holiday shopping” by burglarizing ten vehicles in Oak Lawn during the month of November, according to Oak Lawn police reports.

An astonishing number of these thefts were from unlocked vehicles. Thieves helped themselves to iPods, cell phones, cases of beer, wallets, spare change and cigarettes from unsecured cars, many of them parked overnight in residents’ driveways.

1. A 49-year-old man reported that his truck was burglarized on the 9600 block of South Kildaire Avenue some before 6:30 a.m. Nov. 5. The offender entered the unlocked truck taking the man's wallet from the center console, as well as a bottle of vodka and case of beer.

2. A 28-year-old woman parked her unlocked SUV on her driveway on the 9900 block of W. Harnew Road over night. The next morning around 9 a.m. Nov. 5, her glove box was open with items strewn about the front seat and her iPod missing.

3. A 26-year- man told police that his father heard his car door shutting around 3 a.m. Nov. 5 when it was parked in the driveway on the 4900 block of West Spring Road. The next morning, he discovered that someone had rifled through his car but nothing was missing.

4. Thieves broke into a car that was parked in the driveway on the 5100 block of West 101st St. sometime before 9 a.m. Nov. 5. A 61-year-old woman repored that she observed the driver's side door and glove box open. A cell phone was stolen.

5. Change and a half-carton of cigarettes were stolen from unlocked vehicle parked on the driveway of a home on the 5000 block of West Oak Center Drive sometime before 12:41 p.m.

6. Thieves swiped the stereo out of a van parked on the 9600 block of South Melvina sometime before 9:30 a.m. Nov. 20. The owner told police that the van may have been unlocked.

7. An unlocked car parked in an unsecured car port on the 9700 block of South Cicero Ave. was discovered burgalized sometime before 11:15 a.m. Nov. 20. Thieves stole the radio from the dashboard.

8. Sometime before 10:23 a.m. Nov. 19, thieves stole a radio and cell phone from an unlocked car parked on the 6200 block of West 94th St.

9. Another car from the 6200 block of West 94th St. was burglarized sometime before 9:19 a.m. Nov. 19. Thieves took the radio.

10. A 27-year-old man reported that thieves broke into his car that was parked in a lot on the 9700 block of South Keeler Ave. sometime before 9:39 a.m., taking phone chargers and personal papers. The man told police the doors were locked.
