Palos-Orland League President Barbara Pasquinelli said it is not within the League’s normal procedures to moderate or organize a forum without a community sponsor.

“I and the board of directors felt that when there is a race that has gotten so contentious and so many things flying around, it needs an impartial airing out,” Pasquinelli said.

Audience members will be able to submit written questions on index cards that will be screened by the non-partisan League volunteers for clarity, duplication and off-point personal attacks.

The mayoral candidates—incumbent Heilmann and challenger Bury—will each make opening and closing statements, and be required to think on their feet when answering audience members’ questions.

Neither candidate will see the questions before the forum takes place. The forum will last one hour.

After the main event, the village trustee and clerk candidates will be available to meet with voters. The forum is free and all Oak Lawn residents are invited.

The consolidated election is on April 9. In addition to the village board, residents will be voting for school, library and park board candidates, Moraine Valley Community College trustees, and Worth Township Board.
