Oak Lawn Mayor Race: By the Numbers

A precinct-by-precinct breakdown of votes cast in the 2013 Oak Lawn mayoral election.

With few contested local races and based on the dismal voter turnout in the 2011 consolidated election – Dave Heilmann had everything going for him heading into April 9 in his third mayoral bid over newcomer Sandra Bury.

Conventional wisdom says that low voter turnout usually favors the incumbent, putting the burden on the challenger to bring new voters to the polling booth.

Overall, voter turnout in suburban Cook County was 19 percent, up two points from 2011’s low turnout of 17 percent, according to the Cook County Clerk's office.

Like many south suburbs with contested mayoral races, Oak Lawn’s voter turnout averaged higher than the rest of Cook County, with 30 percent of the village's 35,900 registered voters casting early ballots or going to the polls on April 9.

Heilmann won eleven of the village’s 41 precincts—two of them split precincts. The two-term incumbent fared best in Dist. 5, his home district represented by his friend and village board ally Trustee Carol Quinlan. Heilmann won seven of Dist. 5’s nine precincts.

Heilmann tied with Bury in another split precinct in Dist. 3/5– the same troublesome Sward School precinct where a handful of voters received the wrong ballots in the oh/so/close Dist. 3 trustee race in 2011, in which Trustee Bob Streit barely beat write-in candidate Dan Sodaro.

The only Dist. 5 precinct not won by Heilmann was precinct 28, at Richards High School.

Outside of Dist. 5, Heilmann picked up two precincts in running mate Melissa Moran's Dist. 4 home turf, who lost her own race for village clerk against Jane Quinlan. Heilmann also won a single precinct in Dist. 3.

Bury swept Dist. 1 and Dist. 2. She won all six precincts in her home district—Dist. 2—where she resides and had the heavy backing of Trustee Alex Olejniczak, who was elected to his third term as Dist. 2 trustee.

Bury and Trustee-elect Tim Desmond also swept Dist. 1’s eight precincts, and Bury won all but one of Dist. 6’s eight precincts, where a split Dist. 5/6 precinct went to her opponent.
