Oak Lawn WWII Veteran Defies Memorial Shutdown

Mike and Marie Lynch made the historic D.C. trip with Honor Flight Chicago Wednesday.

Mike and Marie Lynch of Oak Lawn made the trip to the World War II Veterans Memorial, where they were met by Sen. Dick Durbin and Sen. Mark Kirk and other lawmakers, including U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski.

"I couldn't believe it," Mike said about the overwhelming emotional moment.

Ninety World War II veterans from Illinois went to Washington Wednesday to see the memorial built in their honor, and they weren’t disappointed. Guards were ordered to keep out the general public because of the partial government shutdown, but the visiting vets were allowed to pass through the gates.
