Two Students from Queen of Peace Pass First Steps to a VFW Scholarship

Burbank, IL –January 8, 2014 – Each year the VFW offers a scholarship to high school students. The scholarship is called Voice of Democracy. 

An application needed to be filled out in addition to a written and recorded (3-5 minutes) essay on "How you are optimistic about our nation’s future."

Kelly Meloy and Stephanie Vaccaro both applied for the scholarship. On December 9th they attended an awards ceremony for the first step of the process.

Kelly wrote about the American dream of having your own business, owning a home and attending college. Stephanie wrote about the pride she sees everyday for our military and first responders.

Each person at the ceremony received $50 and an award for entering. Three people are chosen from each VFW district to move on to the next level. 

Kelly and Stephanie were two of the three chosen for the Chicago Ridge district. They will be moving onto the next ceremony on Jan 12th where the students will be narrowed down from 3 people in each district to 1 from each district.

The one person from each district will then move onto the state competition. The applicants from the state competitions will be narrowed down and sent to the final stage at the national competition.
