Football: Marist Gives St. Patrick the Boot

Marist 31, St. Patrick 28: Tom O'Neill's 41-yard field goal lifts the RedHawks to a thrilling homecoming victory over St. Patrick.

Breaking It Down: Marist looked to be in control through much of its thrilling 31-28 homecoming football victory over St. Patrick on Friday night. The RedHawks led 14-7 at the half and 21-7 early in the second half. However, St. Patrick battled back to tie the score 28-28  and had the ball with 14 seconds remaining.

Facing a fourth down, the Shamrocks were prepared to punt and head to overtime. However, the RedHawks had other ideas. Dan Schmidt blocked the punt, and Tom O’Neill kicked a 41-yard field goal on the final play to give Marist the victory.

Patch’s MVP: Dan Schmidt blocked the St. Patrick punt, giving the RedHawks the chance to kick the game-winning field goal.

Marist Stat Pack: Marist wideout Ryan Carroll had a 27-yard touchdown reception.

Quotable I: “Coach said before the game it was a goal for us to get one (blocked kick) during the game, and we got one,” Marist's Dan Schmidt said.

Quotable II: “It is good to finally have a game that we needed and to pull it out in the end,” Marist coach Pat Dunne said. “That is the sign of a good team.”

Team Records: Marist is 5-2 overall and 5-1 in the East Suburban Catholic Conference. St. Patrick falls to 3-4 and 2-4.

What’s Next: Marist travels to Carmel next Friday, while St. Patrick plays host to Joliet Catholic Academy.
