Student Food Fight Goes Too Far

Student who started fight gives Oak Lawn High School officials the slip, police say.

Police responded to a “juvenile disturbance” at Oak Lawn Community High School in which a student instigated a food fight and threw a massive amount of food at the student dean, reports said.

When police arrived at the high school around 2:39 p.m. May 25, staff members were looking for the 17-year-old student who allegedly started the fight.

The student was involved in a food fight the week before and was disciplined by school officials. The dean saw the student with a large amount of leftover food on his tray during the May 25 lunch period. She advised the student to come to her office to finish his lunch. Instead, the student picked up a spoonful of Jell-O and flung it at the next table, reports said.

Police said the student stood up and yelled “now,” and began hurling food from his tray. This caused other students to join in the food fight.

The dean was trying to regain order in the cafeteria when the 17-year-old student picked up a large amount of food and intentionally threw it at the dean, a school security officer told police.

The security officer attempted to detain the student, but the student fled the cafeteria. School officials were able to identify the student because a school aide had taken his ID.

The student was later located in the bathroom, but was able to give the security officer the slip, reports said.

The security officer told police he believed the student left the grounds, but probably would be back the next day for finals. School officials said they would sign complaints for aggravated battery and disorderly conduct against the student.
