Conference Success Bodes Well for Oak Lawn's Boys Volleyball Team

A 5-1 record in the tough South Suburban Conference has the Spartans thinking big.

Despite a 25-23, 22-25, 14-25 loss to Oak Forest on Thursday Oak Lawn’s boys volleyball team is rolling in conference.

The Spartans are 8-8 overall, but 5-1 in the South Suburban Conference. On Tuesday, Oak Lawn defeated Argo 13-25, 26-24, 25-22. Pat McGuinness had 12 kills and four blocks in the victory.

Coach Ryan Skendzel said his team will benefit from the tough schedule it has already faced.

“Over the last three weeks we have played against some tough competition in the Marist tournament and Wheaton Warrenville South tournament,” Skendzel said in an email. “Playing teams of this high caliber, both in and out of state, will make us a stronger in the future.”

A conference matchup against rival Richards looms on Monday. Richards defeated Oak Lawn earlier this season in the bronze division championship of the Marist RedHawk Invite.

“We still have a long season ahead of us, but we are on the right path,” Skendzel added.

Braasch Plans for Robert Morris

Oak Lawn softball standout Kim Braasch, a three-year varsity starter at shortstop, will be playing next year at Robert Morris University, according to a news article posted on the Oak Lawn website.

Tennis Triumphs for Spartans

Oak Lawn’s boys tennis team played in three matches this week. The Spartans started the week with a 3-2 victory over Oak Forest on Tuesday. Brothers Marcin and Andy Szczepaniak each earned dominant victories in singles for the Spartans.

Oak Lawn lost to Lincoln-Way North on Wednesday but bounced back to defeat Shepard 4-1 on Thursday. The Szczepaniaks dominated again in singles, and the first doubles team of Jason Klaer and Rami Oraibi won 7-6, 6-1. In No. 3 doubles, Kevin Rodriguez and Roger Vargas won 6-3, 6-2.

A Split for Girls Soccer

The Oak Lawn girls soccer team is 2-3 overall and 2-2 in the South Suburban Conference. On Tuesday, the Lady Spartans lost in a shootout to T.F. United after tying 2-2 in regulation. On Thursday, Oak Lawn bounced back to defeat Richards 2-0. Senior Michaela Sheeran scored the first goal.

Kinga Gil has scored six times to lead the team in goals, while junior Bianca Arias leads the team in assists.
