Extra Points: Richards Wins Bragging Rights ... and So Much More

Bulldogs' victory over crosstown rival Oak Lawn on Thursday night is extra sweet because it came with a conference championship.

Before tipoff of Thursday night’s crosstown showdown between Oak Lawn and Richards, the host Bulldogs celebrated Parents Night, as parents escorted the players onto the court. It was just the start of a night of celebrations for the Bulldogs.

clinched the South Suburban Red crown for the Bulldogs, making it a most memorable night for seniors Raneisha Hill, Rachael Garner, Sommer Jones and Mary Kate Hresil.

“We played three tough games this week against Reavis, Argo and Oak Lawn,” Richards coach Jeff Kortz said. “We fought hard to win the conference. Hats off to Oak Lawn’s seniors. They battled all game long. We’ll get ready for the playoffs now.”

While the Richards seniors were celebrating, it was junior forward Brianna LeBeau who led the way for the Bulldogs on Thursday night. She scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

Oak Lawn got as close as 46-36 in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t make up any more ground.

“It’s hard to get back in a game when you’re down 17 points at the half. Our girls never gave up and fought hard all night,” Oak Lawn coach Janet Haubenreiser said.

The Best Play: With 3:03 left in the first half, Oak Lawn’s Bridget Niemiec converted a one-handed layup over her head to cut the Bulldogs’ advantage to 25-12.

Team Records: Richards improved to 15-9 overall and 8-5 in the South Suburban Red Conference. Oak Lawn fell to 14-11 overall and 7-6 in the same conference.

Fan-Tastic: The Bulldogs’ parents were very enthusiastic during Parents Night. The noise factor was definitely in the Bulldogs’ favor.

A Look Ahead: Richards will play Providence Catholic on Tuesday at 8:10 p.m. Providence Regional. Oak Lawn will face Simeon on Tuesday at 8:10 p.m. in the Mother McAuley Regional.

Sophomore Score: Oak Lawn beat Richards 50-38 on Thursday, as Jannah Mahmoud scored 12 points and Sam Dillion had 11. Donatzy Viquez score eight points for Richards.
