Football: Marist Reigns on Marian Catholic's Homecoming Game

Marist 52, Marian 27: Behind an explosive offense and special teams, the RedHawks run wild over the Spartans.

Breaking It Down:  scored five second-half touchdowns to blow open a close game with  on Friday night, and the RedHawks ran away with a 52-27 road victory.

Marist's Ryan Meyer continued his stellar season, grabbing three touchdown passes and returning a kickoff 80 yards for another score. Meyer finished with 65 yards on five catches. Quarterback Ian Woodworth threw for 213 yards on 15-of-23 passing with five touchdowns.

Jeruel Taylor led the charge for Marian, rushing for 182 yards on 24 carries and finding the end zone once.

Patch’s MVP: Ryan Meyer, Marist. The player who never comes off the field for the RedHawks answered Marian's first score with an 80-yard kickoff return touchdown. Then he grabbed three more scores from Woodworth through the air.

Marist Stat Pack: Marist got two kick-return touchdowns—Meyer's 80-yarder and an 81-yarder by Flynn Nagel to start the second half. Peter Andreotti found the end zone on a 2-yard plunge in the third quarter. Nic Weisha had touchdown catches of 15 and 19 yards.

Marian Stat Pack: Taylor's game put him over 1,000 yards on the season. Rob Cifelli threw for a 44-yard touchdown to Randell Wells. Cifeli also rushed for a 71-yard score.

Quotable I: Marist receiver Ryan Meyer: “We had a good week of practice. We had a bounce week from last week. We worked real hard this week and we showed it today.”

Quotable II: Marian running back Jeruel Taylor: “Mistakes got us. Turning the ball over, sitting on the sideline and watching their offense throw bombs and score cut deep for us. I think that got into our heads a lot, so we couldn't rebound.”

Team Records: Marist improved to 4-2 on the year and 4-1 in conference. Marian Catholic fell to 3-3 overall and in conference.

What’s Next: Marist hosts St. Patrick High School at 7 p.m. Friday. Marian Catholic travels to Joliet to take on Joliet Catholic at 7 p.m. on Friday.
