Veterans Honored With Ceremonies and Freebies

Diabetes awareness, chamber luncheon and local church happenings spotlighted in the week ahead.

Veterans Honored

The Village of Oak Lawn will observe Veterans Day with a ceremony at the Veterans Memorial at Cook and Dumke Drive, north of the library. Veterans and friends are asked to start gathering around 10:30 a.m. Ceremony features Johnson-Phelps VFW color guard, Congressman Dan Lipinski, local elected officials, honored veterans and the OLHMS Choir.

Oak Lawn Chamber November Luncheon

The Oak Lawn Chamber’s November luncheon meets at 11:30 a.m. at the Hilton Oak Lawn, 9333 S. Cicero Ave. Featured guest speaker is Oak Lawn Police Chief Michael Murray, who will offer security tips for keeping you and your business safe. $25. Guests welcome.

Village Board Meeting

Fasten your seatbelts. The Oak Lawn Village Board meets at 7:30 p.m. at Village Hall, 9446 S. Raymond Ave. Meeting is open to the public.

Nuclear Waste Public Meeting

Did you know that Illinois is the nation’s nuclear waste dump? Come hear the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission talk about nuclear waste and SPEAK OUT at the Marriott Oak Brook, 1401 W. 22nd St., Oak Brook. 6-7 p.m. open house; 7-10 p.m. public meeting.

Free Health Screenings

The Oak Lawn Partnership is offering free blood pressure and other health-related screenings starting at 10 a.m. Free hearing tests available to first 15 attendees. Screenings are in the lower-level meeting room at the Oak Lawn Library, 9427 S. Raymond Ave.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 14

Diabetes Awareness

Sen. Bill Cunningham and Rep. Fran Hurley are hosting a diabetes awareness event at the constituent service office from 9-11 a.m. at the constituent service offices located at 10400 S. Western Ave., Chicago; and from 1-3 p.m. at 16033 S. 94th Ave. in Orland Hills. Medical professionals will be on hand to offer free diabetes screenings, answer questions and provide follow-up referrals.


Advocate Healthcare Diabetes Event

In honor of National Diabetes Awareness Day, Advocate Healthcare is offering a presentation on diabetes medications, meal planning and diabetes management starting at 2 p.m. at the Oak Lawn Library.
