SATURDAY MAY 18 The driver of a Volkswagen Jetta was pulled over on suspicion of drunk driving around 9:45 p.m. when the car was spotted swerving over the line markers on 95th Street between Southwest Highway and 54th Avenue, reports said. The officer said he waited several moments for the driver, identified as Arletta Y. Simms Moore, 54, of Chicago Ridge, to roll down the window. Moore told police she was on her way to pick up a family member at work, reports said. Police said Moore needed assistance locating her insurance card from a stack of papers. Robbers confront woman in shopping center parking lot, then marched her over to Walgreen's where they made her withdraw $500, cops say.
A 38-year-old woman filed a delayed police report after being confronted by three robbers in a parking lot who forced her to withdraw money from an ATM, reports said. Oak Lawn police are investigating a robbery that occurred around 2 p.m. May 6, where a woman says the robbers confronted her in a shopping center parking lot at 8700 S. Cops shut down an Oak Lawn gas station after confidential source makes synthetic pot buy, reports say.
A gas station clerk was arrested after a confidential source purchased synthetic cannabis in a sale arranged by police, reports said. Muhammed K. Qandil, 18, of the 8700 block of South Oak Park Avenue, faces charges of delivery and possession of a controlled substance. Oak Lawn Police arranged a purchase after hearing of a confidential source buying K2 cannabinoids from various clerks at the Citgo station at 6801 W. 87th St. over the past several weeks, reports said. About 25 protesters staged a march down 95th Street to protest what they see as racial profiling tactics from the Evergreen Park and Oak Lawn police departments.
A small but peaceful crowd was on hand Saturday afternoon as a march was staged down 95th Street to protest alleged racial profiling by the Evergreen Park and Oak Lawn police departments. The march was greeted by a large police presence as area departments responded to the uncertain nature of protests planned in the age of social media. Evergreen Park Police Chief Michael Saunders estimated that there were about 50 to 60 officers on the street and more on reserve should the need arise. The need never did as the small group of marchers proceeded largely without incident. NEW LENOX May 9: Alejandro Aguillon, 22, of the 100 block of Branchaw Boulevard, New Lenox, was charged with driving under the influence, making an improper turn and speeding, according to a report. Police stopped Aguillon at about 2:13 a.m. near the intersection of Cedar Road and Terry Ellen Lane. Aguillon was allegedly found under the influence of alcohol. Police saw a car in the rear parking lot of White Castle, 2555 W. 95th St., and reported smelling an odor of marijuana coming from it. When the car tried to leave, a cigar was tossed out of the window. About 0.7 gram of a substance that tested positive for marijuana was found. A lawsuit against an imprisoned preacher from Crete and an Indiana megachurch topped the week's court news.
A former megachurch preacher sentenced to 12 years in federal prison in March for carrying on a sexual relationship with a teenage member of his congregation was sued in Will County court. In addition to preacher Jack Schaap, 55, of Crete, the First Baptist Church of Hammond was named as a defendant in the lawsuit. The parents of a teenage girl Schaap had sex with while he was pastor of the First Baptist Church of Hammond filed the lawsuit. The suit identifies the parents as "John Doe and Mary Doe," and the teen as "Jane Doe." The suit gives Jane Doe's date of birth as June 27, 1995.
